The duties include but are not limited to:

  • Interprets for parent-teacher conferences, student assessments, home visits, other parent involvement activities, and school-home communications.

  • Interprets for IEP meetings as required.

  • Translates home/school communications for limited English proficient students.

  • Translates student foreign transcripts, IEP's and other documents as necessary.

  • Assists with identification and monitoring of limited English proficient students.

  • Assists with collection of program data for reports to local, state, and federal agencies.

  • Assists with the instruction/remediation of limited English proficient students.

  • Assists families of newly arrived National Origin Minority students in the school registration process.

  • Assists with collection of data and maintenance of records of National Origin Minority students.

  • Assists EL students by tutoring, and/or working with them individually and in small groups under the supervision of a certified teacher or the ESL resource teacher.

  • Engages in professional development activities.

  • Participates in regularly scheduled ESL staff meetings and in-services.

  • Fosters positive relations between the home and school.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following qualifications below:

  • Successful completion of at least 48 semester hours of study at an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the courses were taken; OR
  • An Associate's Degree or higher documented on an official transcript from an institution of higher education that was appropriately accredited per the Alabama State Department of Education at the time the degree was earned; OR
  • A passing score of 3 or higher on the state-prescribed WorkKeys Assessments. The tests currently required are Applied Math, Work Place Documents and Business Writing.

Official Transcripts and Score Reports documenting successful completion of all education requirements will be required prior to beginning work in the position.

Must be fluent in a language other than English- Spanish, Cambodian, or Laotian preferred.

In addition to the requirements of a paraprofessional, the applicant must be completely fluent in both English and the native language in speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

Salary Range: From/To Beginning pay - $29,665.00

Applicants selected for classified positions must undergo (or have undergone) an ABI/FBI criminal history background check (fingerprinting administered through sites selected and approved by the MCPSS and State of Alabama Education Department) and be declared suitable and fit to teach under state law. Applicants selected must also pass a drug-screening test via forms provided by Human Resources during the selection process.
