DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The role of this position involves actively participating in a 12-month training program that focuses on performing technical tasks related to highway design. As part of the Highway Design Squad, you will work closely with the supervisor to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the squad. This will include assisting in the preparation of various highway plans, such as right of way plot plans and supplemental drawings. Additionally, you will be responsible for carrying out a range of design duties and tasks, utilizing computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to create construction plans and associated documents.

In order to determine the specific requirements of each project, you will accompany the supervisor and/or higher-level technician on field views. This will help you gain a better understanding of the plan needs for each project. To streamline the process, you will also utilize AutoTab to generate tabulation and summary sheets. Adhering to the guidelines outlined in Design Manual III, you will ensure that all drafting work meets the required standards.

As part of your role, you will also assist in the preparation of various maps, sketches, and graphs. This may involve interpreting and plotting deeds to develop right of way plans. Additionally, you will be involved in computing earthwork, materials quantities, and calculating excavation. Finally, you will actively participate in final inspections and office meetings, contributing to the overall success of the team.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. Telework schedule is determined by District and Statewide Policy. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Uniontown.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
