Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Engineering Technician Associate position is the entry level for the Engineering Technician class series and is located in Wichita, KS. Successful candidates may be appointed at a higher-level dependent upon experience and qualifications. This position allows KDOT to train and develop construction (or technician) staff to complete required responsibilities. The employee performs assignments and gains experience while in a training status.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts Prestressed Concrete Inspection by observing the fabrication of beams, panels, and barriers for conformance with specifications, consulting with supervisor/coworker to review plans and inspections, and providing interpretations of such to fabricator's personnel.

  • Performs sampling and inspection, including consulting with supervisor/coworker for selecting a sample, the basis of visual inspection, and how to apply and interpret KDOT, AASHTO, and ASTM specifications, and proper destructive and non-destructive test methods.

  • Conducts sampling and testing of Portland Cement, maintaining knowledge of the producer's loading and weighing personnel and supervisors and keeping the KDOT supervisors informed of the normal course of operations. This position also consults with the supervisor to acquire samples for all types of cement, initiates the necessary reports, correctly checks and files the required documentation, and prepares representative portions of each sample which will be forwarded to the Materials and Research Lab for further evaluation.

  • Performs other office work, such as compiling data, data entry, creating AASHTOware reports for samples and communication with producers/partners.

  • Performs minor maintenance in laboratory, drives vehicles to the KDOT shops for repair, and assists coworkers in the preparation and/or performance of routine testing as necessary.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General computer skills related to documentation, reports, and/or data entry.

  • Construction experience or material testing experience.

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:

  • A CDL must be obtained within 90 days of hire and maintained. KDOT provides CDL training at no cost to the employee.

  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.

  • This CDL position is subject to drug and alcohol testing under the authority of the US Department of Transportation. The selected candidate will be required to pass a DOT pre-employment/pre-duty drug test as a condition of employment in this position. (This position will also require you to participate in random testing, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing.)

  • Any Commercial Driver who has received a Confirmed Positive Result or the Equivalent and has not successfully completed all Rehabilitation Program requirements and follow-up testing requirements is not eligible for this position. (Per SOM 2.1.10).

  • Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate required in accordance with Executive Order 2004-03.
