Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

This Engineering Technician Associate position is the entry level for the Engineering Technician class series and is located in Topeka, KS. Successful candidates may be appointed at a higher-level dependent upon experience and qualifications. This position exists to catalog, assign, and deliver all incoming samples received by the Materials and Research Center (MRC) for testing, provide technical assistance to individuals delivering samples regarding relevant specifications and procedures, and manage other miscellaneous parcels both delivered to and shipped from the MRC.

NOTE: The employee in this position must also maintain Certified Inspection certifications under the KDOT CIT Program as outlined in the Engineering Technician Progression Manual for the specific job path and any additional as outlined by the Senior Manager.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Receives all incoming samples to be tested at the MRC, standard deliveries, and other special freight items. This position also inspects deliveries for damages or signs of mishandling prior to signing to verify receipt, assists in preparing packages for outgoing shipment, and organizes, files, and maintains all necessary tracking information for incoming and outgoing shipments.

  • Enters sample information into the Receiving Diary, assigns laboratory number(s), and enters laboratory number, date received, and any other pertinent information into system for samples tracked by the AWP system. This position also checks to ensure all other necessary paperwork accompanies sample and contacts the responsible parties in the event of incomplete sample data, and organizes, files, and maintains all necessary documentation regarding samples received.

  • Distributes received and checked-in samples to person(s) responsible for testing and ensures timely delivery. Some samples may be moderately hazardous so it's imperative that the incumbent is able to identify the type of sample and follow all proper handling procedures.

  • Oversees the recycling program for waste materials at the MRC, makes regular rounds to collect paper products from recycle bins throughout the building, educates employees of the MRC regarding the recycling programs that are in place, and contacts responsible parties to schedule pick ups when recycle bins are full.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, such as assisting other Physical Test Subsections with their workload or helping with the MRC stockroom.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Driver's License at time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General computer skills related to documentation, reports, and/or data entry.

  • Experience with AWP is preferred as much of the data entry happens in AWP along with some data entry into an access database.

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements:

  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
