The Engineering Technician is responsible for the testing of construction materials (soil, concrete, bituminous, aggregates, mortar and masonry units, etc.) as contracted for by our clients. Some tests will be conducted in the field and others in the laboratory. The engineering technician must ensure accuracy and clearly communicate results of the testing and observations to the Project Manager in a timely manner.

Essential Duties:

This list of duties, skills and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Performs field and laboratory tests on soil, concrete, bituminous, aggregates, mortar and masonry units, structural steel welding and bolted connections as well as other construction materials.

  • Maintains orderly and timely processing of project paperwork including completion of field or laboratory test or observation sheets, and log book and other necessary requirements for nuclear gauge operation.

  • Communicates all job observations, passing or failing results of testing, and any other information to project manager.

  • Maintains log of laboratory inventory and calibration work

  • Seeks assistance as needed, and follows guidelines and procedures for testing to ensure all results are accurate.

  • Keeps vehicles clean, maintained, and organized. Keeps vehicle and gas logs up-to-date.

  • Represents NTI in a professional manner through communication and appearance on jobsites.

Interest in materials testing; some hands on experience preferred.

Language Skills:

Ability to read technical procedures, analyze, and interpret gauges.

Ability to write and log results of testing processes.

Excellent verbal communications skills for working with contractors and internal staff.

Mathematical Skills:

Strong aptitude for mathematics a plus.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, diagrammed, or scheduled form.

Other Qualifications:

Possess a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record; basic computer knowledge to work on new programs, log results and enter time and job data.

Education, Licensure, and Certifications

Required: High School Diploma or equivalent; ACI Soils Certification or must obtain within first 6 months of hire; Nuclear Density Gauge Certification or ability to obtain within first 6 months of hire.

Preferred: Associates degree in Civil Engineering; ICC Certifications; DOT Certifications

The noise level can be moderate to loud on jobsites and moderate when working in the lab. At least 50% of the work will be performed outdoors where individual will be subject to extreme heat and cold, snow and rain.

LOCATION: Rapid City, SD PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provides CAD support, including drafting for electrical, mechanical, and occasional civil engineering projects, map production, and engineering standards maintenance. Also creates, updates, and/or maintains drawings, records, and documentation. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Senior Electrical T&D Engineer ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Create and update working drawings using the latest CAD software. * Produce CAD drawings in both vector and raster format as required by the engineering staff for construction of power supply, transmission, distribution, and substation facilities. * Organize CAD and mapping information so that it is easily retrievable by engineering and other staff in emergency situations. * Produce diagrams/maps as required for tree-trimming, facility maintenance, facility renumbering, one-line switching maps, etc. * Assign unique identification numbers to electric facilities to ensure the safety of field crews. * Provide reproductions, copies, and prints as requested. * Manage record drawings and documents in organized file structure. * Order drafting and printing supplies as needed. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: * Effectively communicate with staff at all levels. * Occasionally required to conduct topographic and other field surveys. * With the support of IT, diagnose software/hardware computability issues related to CAD software applications. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: * Engineering Services staff, substation maintenance/construction crews, and GIS staff. * Maintain supportive and respectful working relationships with all Black Hills Corporation employees – including, but not limited to, engineers, dispatchers, lineman, serviceman, construction service reps, IT staff, etc. * Maintain professional relationships with vendors and contractors. EXPERIENCE: * Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCad. * Two – five years of experience using AutoCAD for electrical or physical design projects desired. EDUCATION: * Prefer two-year technical degree in CAD, computer science or related discipline or four years of equivalent experience. KNOWLEDGE: * Proficient knowledge of Electric and Gas utility systems desired. SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS: * Ability to read, analyze, and understand electrical schematics and diagrams. * Ability to read and understand mechanical and civil drawings. * This position operates in a typical office environment. * Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment. * Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. * Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision and accurately record time spent on projects. * Proficiency in computer applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and various specialized software such as Adobe Pro and Google Earth. * Ability to think and act independently and develop creative, analytical solutions to resolve complex problems. * Ability to demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: * Limited field work required for verification of drawings and documents.
