Overview:

Pay Range: $28.03 - $35.54 per hour (Local #1 Pay Plan, ENG24 Step 1-13)

Hiring Range: $28.03 - $29.74 per hour (Local #1 Pay Plan, ENG24 Step 1-4 DOQ)

There is one Engineering Technician II opening with the Yakima County Roads Division. This position performs various technical duties and provides design and drafting assistance related to the design of County Construction projects. Assists engineers with the use of Civil 3D design software for the production of contract documents and plans and production of preliminary design layouts to be used in final plan layouts.

Note: This is a Local #1 Bargaining Unit Agreement position.

This recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies that occur within 90 days of the closing of this position. (This excludes Yakima County Sheriff's Office and Department of Corrections)

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties:

Designs less complex public works projects and assists higher-level personnel with design and computer drafting of more complex projects.

Drafts and prepares plans and working drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D software programs.

Writes specifications, special provisions project resolutions and correspondence. Computes quantities and develops cost estimates. Organizes and tracks project environmental documentation.

Makes design reviews of projects in the field, and assists in developing project scope documentation

Other duties required.

Education & Experience:

Associate degree or two-year technical certificate in Civil Engineering AND two (2) years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Required:

  • possession of a valid Washington State Drivers' License is required at time of appointment; and,

  • successful completion of a general employment verification.

Preferred:

  • experience using computers and AutoCAD Civil 3D software applications;

  • interpreting engineering drawings; and,

  • drafting layout, presentation and plan preparation techniques.

Equipment Used: computer, calculator, drafting instruments, plotting devices, copy machine, and a passenger vehicle.

Working Conditions: This position is rated as Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Environment: work is performed primarily in an office environment and may involve interaction with the public. Some travel and fieldwork may be necessary under unfavorable conditions.

Physical Demands: reaching, sitting, standing, walking, fingering, climbing, and hearing.

Intellectual Demands: ability to multitask, confidentiality, ability to work under pressure, ability to articulate and communicate information in conversations, ability to follow written instruction, and ability to follow verbal instruction.

Knowledge:

  • mathematical computations;

  • materials used in engineering projects;

  • road design principles and Standards;

  • safety precautions; and,

  • customer service techniques.

Skills (and abilities):

  • reading maps;

  • using computers and AutoCAD Civil 3D software applications;

  • interpreting engineering drawings;

  • drafting layout, presentation and plan preparation techniques;

  • establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public; and,

  • communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information.
