Summary

DEFINITION

This is the entry level engineering position, and employees in this classification perform routine technical and operational project related support tasks under direct supervision. The work requires a general familiarity with the discipline involved in the particular position and the ability to comprehend the significance of and the procedures and methods involved in, assigned tasks.

Employees in this classification will be required to perform portions or all of the duties normally falling under positions within or below this classification other than the one to which they are originally assigned. Such supplementary duties may be assigned for the purpose of project expediency and as a means of broadening the experience of the employee. Assignments of this nature will be dependent on current workload and staffing requirements.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Functional position titles falling within this classification include, but are not limited to, the following titles and duties:

Essential Duties

DRAFTSPERSON

1.Traces final alignments, grades, details, etc., from working drawings to final ink drawings.

2.Uses a mechanical lettering set to letter title, notes, etc., on final ink drawings.

3.Compiles plans, specifications, reports, or studies.

4.Tabulates or adds figures from quantity measurements, inventories, etc.

5.Plots cross-sections and reduces field notes.

6.Perform repetitive and relatively simple computations relating to traverses, quantity measurements, etc.

SURVEY TECHNICIAN

1.Cuts trees and brush ahead of the field survey crew to allow chaining measurements, profile and "Bench" levels and staking of centerline.

2.Marks and drives in informational construction control stakes as directed by the Party Chief or a senior crewmember.

3.Knowledge in use of measuring tapes or "Chains" for accurate horizontal field measurement.

4.Holds or sets range poles, plum bobs, prisms, tripods, targets, etc., for sighting by the instrument man.

5.Sharpens and maintains clearing tools.

6.Provides occasional assistance with survey related office tasks, such as field note reduction, etc.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN

1.Assist in checking grades and dimensions from field construction control stakes.

2.Assists in performing field quality control tests for compaction, moisture content, concrete slump, etc.

3.Obtains samples of incorporated materials for laboratory testing.

4.Records and reports general project progress.

5.Acts as "scaleman" for weighing and recording hauling units.

6.Assists with construction related office work, such as totaling of field tabulated quantities, end area calculations, estimate preparation, etc.

TRAFFIC & PLANNING TECHNICIAN

1.Assists in the collection of traffic data, such as vehicle counts, turning movements, etc.

2.Updates existing inventories or listings of road related data.

3.Assists in collecting road "inventory" information such as pavement types, road widths, bridge conditions, etc.

4.Assist in field placement of traffic markings (minor striping, traffic "buttons", etc.), and control devices (signs, barricades, delineators, etc.).

5.Acts as traffic flag person, pilot car, etc., in support of construction operations, either "County force" or contract.

6.Tabulates and catalogs collected filed data.

7.Assists in the preparation of charts, tables, tabulations, etc., for use as exhibits in traffic and planning reports and presentations.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Classification requires graduation from high school or G. E. D equivalent. Additional job related course work, including algebra, trigonometry, and geometry is desirable.

Experience

The positions under this classification require a minimum of one (1) year experience in a work discipline of comparable complexity to that involved in the position applied for.

NOTE: A valid Washington State driver's license is required.

The County will require a physical examination and copy of motor vehicle driving record. Appointments will be made upon approval of physical exam and driving record.
