Hiring Range $60,570-$61,063

This is an Engineering Technician II position located in the Traffic Engineering Office in Sylva, which will work throughout Division 14.  This position will function as lead project inspector which conducts independent moderate to complex inspection to ensure project construction is in compliance with purchase order contract agreements, plans, standards and specifications.

 A project inspector performs a variety of inspection and survey duties for material testing, signing, pavement markings, pavement markers and traffic control.  Employee will be able to obtain s-dimensions for steel post placement for shoulder mounted highway signs and work outside for extended periods in variable weather conditions on uneven terrain.  Project inspector must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing.  Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position requires a working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in the construction and maintenance of roadway facilities with limited supervision.  The successful Applicant must possess a thorough understanding of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the Department's Standards and Specifications as they relate to these assets.

 This position requires the ability to document findings and to take corrective actions. This position requires the ability to convey information clearly and concisely, verbally or in writing, to individuals and/or groups and to listen and respond appropriately to others.  Must have the ability to evaluate and apply engineering judgment to plan interpretation; establish positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors.Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform measurements related to distances and/or elevations.

  • Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports.

  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.

  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to work in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.  Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.

 Must be able to lift 50 lbs.  Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division.  Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations.

Safety toe shoes required.  Applicant should be able to safely operate a state-owned vehicle.

Associates degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Elaine Tyler at 828-586-6018
