Minimum Qualifications of Education and Experience:

• Must be enrolled in a civil engineering technology program at employment start date.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.

Nature of Work:

• Under direct supervision of the Engineering Project Coordinator, performs a variety of moderately difficult technical engineering work in field and office as assigned.

Duties / Responsibilities

Primary Essential Work Functions:

• Safely sets up and operates survey instruments as a member of a survey crew.
• Safely performs inspections of contract construction projects as assigned.
• Prepares neat, concise, and accurate documents related to design, construction, contract administration and record drawings.
• Uses computer aided drafting and surveying systems competently to design Capital Improvements Projects under the direct supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer.
• Performs materials testing of concrete, asphalt, and other construction materials, including air entrapment, slump tests, strength, densities, temperatures and similar field tests.
• Records field notes and reports on projects in progress or upon completion.
• Assists in management of the street cut and restoration monitoring program related to right-of-way excavations, both in easements and street rights-of-way (City Code, Sec. 6.06, Right-of-Way Management); and performs follow-up inspections of work done.
• Maintains pavement management system.
• Safely responds to Gopher One-Call requests for location of City facilities (including lighting, fiber optics, water, sewer, and storm drain line) under the Minnesota One Call system.
• Responds to complaints of illegal activities in the right-of-way, such as encroachments (i.e., signs, fences, etc.).
• Enforces City sidewalk snow/ice removal ordinances and provides for clearing of snow/ice if property owner does not comply with removal order. Coordinates billings to property owners and payment to contractors for snow removal and sidewalk replacement work performed.
• Prepares for issuance ofvarious permits and licenses.
• Registers excavation contractors (per City Code, Sec. 6.06).
• Assists in data collection for traffic studies through the deployment of traffic counting equipment and/or manual data collection.
• Assists in troubleshooting traffic control signals with operational issues.

Qualifications / Conditions of Employment

Conditions of Employment:

• Must maintain enrollment in a civil engineering technology program to remain eligible for a Temporary Part-Time Engineering Technician position.
• Upon completion of the civil engineering technology program, the Temporary Part-Time Engineering Technician position will end within three (3) months of degree graduation date.
• Mobility to work around field construction sites, climb ladders, and access aerial, buried, and surface construction improvements and facilities for inspection.
• Ability to work in confined spaces under all normal outdoor temperature conditions as well as in an office environment.
• Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive in the state of Minnesota.
• Satisfactory completion of background examination, physical examination, and drug testing.
• Must comply with organizational and departmental policies.
• Must comply with data practices policies and standards relative to not public data. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, the not public data must be properly stored according to city policy and the Minnesota Statutes.
• Safety Sensitive Notice. This is a safety sensitive position which requires cannabis pre-employment drug testing. Safety sensitive position means a job, in which an impairment caused by drug, alcohol or cannabis usage would threaten the health and safety of any person.

Hours of Work

This position typically works Monday- Friday from 7:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. Evening, weekend, and overtime hours may be required as necessary.
