WHO WE ARE

Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) is a rapidly growing, venture-backed veterinary emergency company with hospital locations across the USA. We are profitable, doubling our size every year, and supported by a multi-billion-dollar investor. Our mission is to help people and their pets when they need it most. We are changing the face of emergency veterinary medicine with a "customer first" mentality.

THE ROLE'S MISSION

This role will be part of the team that is building "DogByte", our custom built PIMS (practice information management system). Just like there are other generic veterinary hospitals out there, there are several generic PIMS that our thousands of front line "veggies" (doctors, nurses, and support staff) could be forced to use. But VEG "only does emergency" and needed a PIMS that only does emergency. By building and continuously improving and scaling DogByte, our team is providing our veggies with software that is as reliable and as easy to use as a stethoscope.

WHO YOU NEED TO BE

We need an agile expert who is always looking for ways to improve a process. You need to be proficient in various agile methodologies, able to suggest improvements rather than full-on process overhauls.

We also need someone who is able to establish collaboration and who is just as comfortable telling product managers to work on their backlog as they are telling engineers to review PRs.

We need someone who loves tracking stats like velocity, helping engineers understand their personal velocities, encouraging them to keep improving. We need someone who wants to see our automated regression suite grow while the number of regressions released to the field stays steady at zero.

We want to become more Lean and "experimental" in our process, and could really use someone who can help establish AB tests and success metrics for features, consolidate that data after release, and work with product and stakeholders to make future decisions based on that data.

If that's you and how you (and your prior teams) like to work, we want you here.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

VEG is very inclusive, so we're trying to avoid naming this role the traditional "Scrum _____" name. This role will be called our "Agile Cultivator". VEG loves its "vegetable" references, so you might as well get used to it now, but our process will need to be cultivated very soon.

Our agile process works somewhat well now, but we're trying to develop a more reliable sprint rhythm. We are in the process of nearly-doubling our engineering team size, and we realize it'll be difficult to establish reliability without you.

You'll need to help evolve our process; run our sprint ceremonies; keep developers, designers, and QA on task; help product keep their backlog groomed, manage stakeholder feedback; and repeat all of the above every two weeks.

You'll mainly work out of our headquarters (VQ). If our teammates (and their pets) are lucky enough to live near one of our hospitals, they often work remotely from there and that's totally fine. Occasionally there's a fun team trip to a new hospital that just came online (we're all waiting for one to open in Maui). These hospital visits help us observe problems (and solutions) first hand and get a better understanding of what our front line veggies need, and generally just know how they do what they do. The free snacks in the break room are a nice bonus.

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE

We hire the best of the best. It is essential that you have expert level knowledge of Scrum and other software development processes.

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred or equivalent experience

  • 3-5 years of experience

  • Scrum expert

  • Competent in XP, Kanban, and Lean

  • Productboard experience a plus

  • Huge fan of spreadsheets and presentations

TALENT + CULTURE AT VEG

At VEG, we want people and their pets to feel safe, secure, and valued; we want our employees to feel the same way. What we're aiming to achieve on the customer side is equivalent in nature to what we want for our employees: to have the best experience possible. With the highest NPS score in our industry, we're ready to ensure that VEG remains the place where the best and brightest in the emergency world not only want to work, but stay and grow. For our customers and their pets, we strive to find a way to say, "yes." We do the same and more for our teams. In fact, VEG is one of this year's nominees for INC Magazine's Best Places to Work!
