As the Product Design / Forward Engineering Manager, your exciting, challenging, and rewarding day is started by being recognized by our Clients, our Company, and your Team. You'll work in a fast-paced environment with a dynamic, engaged, highly inventive, open and collaborative team tackling challenging projects related to the transformation of the oil and gas industry. You'll spend some of your day writing e-mails, placing phone calls, attending, and leading meetings (both internal and external meetings, virtually and in-person), participating in workshops, and most importantly, delighting our clients with the best-in-class service and products that meet the most demanding rotating machinery challenges. Additionally, as the leader of the department you will spend time developing your teams' capabilities via many avenues, from coaching to process/tool creation and/or enhancement.

The Product Design / Forward Engineering Manager is the local leader and in-country manager for the Americas Turbo-compressor Service Engineering organization to complete contracts relating to the modernization, upgrades, revamps, and footprint replacement of turbo-compressors and centrifugal pumps. The primary responsibility of this manager is to provide day-to-day leadership and guidance to the local engineering functions that support: engineered parts, upgrades, modernizations, revamps, and footprint compressor activities of legacy and non-OEM machinery such as radial/axial compressors, centrifugal pumps, and related equipment.

The manager ensures the team is following best, current engineering practices while respecting the unique design and operational requirements of our multiple product types and brands. The manager will optimize resource usage including the direct and indirect team members. The manager has responsibility to maintain schedule commitments to support on-time delivery, reduce response and cycle time, reduce hours/costs, improve quality/reduce NC's, develop team member competences in multiple areas (product type, brand, and functional areas), collect/maintain/report metrics, participate in continuous improvement initiatives, and ensure good "team" collaboration within our group and across peer organizations.

Excellent collaboration, communication, and alignment with the other Engineering Department Managers (Design Engineering, Component Design Engineering, Systems & Auxiliary Engineering, and Controls Engineering) is critical to this role.

Equally important to this role, is the growth experience and networking this position offers the successful applicant beyond the Design Engineering function. This position offers the applicant the ability to closely interact with the entire Americas Engineering Management Team, and participate in Global Service Engineering workshops and potentially expand their role.

Position reports directly to the Head of Compressor Revamp Americas for the turbo-compressor product line.

Limited domestic/international travel is required.

This position will be located at the Siemens Energy facility located in Olean, NY ; Painted Post, NY; or Bethlehem, PA depending on candidates skill/experience.

How You'll Make an Impact

  • Work safely following all corporate / local procedures and completion of all required safety training

  • Maintain and share accurate and organized design engineering records using approved systems

  • Follow all processes and obtain approvals where required

  • Directly manage a group of engineers: developing and maintaining skill competency matrices, managing performance management plans, managing expense reports, developing succession plans, supporting strategic work force planning.

  • Create/manage a engineering demand/resource schedule

  • Provide necessary engineering leadership to support design and manufacture of replacement machinery, machinery revamps, and machinery upgrades, e.g. turbo-compressors, pumps, and related

  • Participate in recurring staff, production, quality meetings, as required

  • Responsible for maintaining engineering budgets: maintaining task benchmark hours for cost estimating, adhering to as-sold budgets, and maintaining utilization targets

  • Responsible for on-time delivery of engineering deliverables to internal and external customers.

  • Responsible for quality of engineering deliverables: Specifications, Calculations, Analysis, Reports, Manufacturing drawings, Bills of material, Manufacturing lists, etc

  • Responsible for ongoing cost and cycle time reduction projects within design engineering

  • Collect, analyze, and use data driven management techniques to identify area for team improvement and make positive changes

  • Responsible for implementing continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering team

  • Maintain and publish key metrics for the product design engineering group for cost, cycle time, quality, absorption/utilization, timeliness (complete: on-time/late and in-process: past due, will be late, on-track)

  • Ensure teams designs are in accordance with contract requirements and established product standards

  • Participate in coordination, collaboration, and moderation of technical matters with collaborators from manufacturing and supply chain

  • Participate in development, implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of engineering tools, product improvements, and standards associated with design, manufacturing, testing, and repair of turbomachinery products

  • Other miscellaneous duties to support the product lines success

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical/Aerodynamic, Chemical, or equivalent degrees from an ABET accredited college/university will be considered)

  • 5-10 years' of experience in detailed product design engineering, forward engineering, project engineering, or equivalent

  • 5-years' experience working with rotating machinery, e.g. centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, axial compressors, hot gas expanders, auxiliary systems

  • 5-years' experience managing technical personnel

  • Proficiency with PLM (Team Center/Globus) and ERP system (SAP or Oracle).

  • High attention to detail and big picture problem solver

  • Ability to work collaboratively and individually with the same enthusiasm and intensity.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills

  • Possess and demonstrate a high degree of tact and professionalism; and be capable of interacting with Management, Peers, Subordinates, Shop Personnel, and Clients

  • Good organizational and time management skills

  • Solid computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, Power-Point), advanced knowledge of 2D/3D CAD, and experience with ERP systems (SAP and/or Oracle)

  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally with short notice (estimated 10-30% travel)

  • Applicants must be legally authorized for employment in the United States without need for current or future employer-sponsored work authorization. Siemens Energy employees with current visa sponsorship may be eligible for internal transfers.

Preferred

  • Master's degree

  • High level knowledge of these subjects is desirable: thermodynamics, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, rotor-dynamics, strength-of-materials / solid mechanics, materials-of-construction selection, machinery design.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Siemens Energy / Dresser-Rand / Ingersoll Rand / Clark / Cooper / Rolls-Royce / DeLaval legacy products and current services and offerings of Siemens Energy.

  • Experience working with rotating machinery / turbo-machinery such as centrifugal/radial compressors, axial compressors, expanders

  • Possess fundamental knowledge of turbomachinery theory and thorough understanding of standard engineering principles

  • Experience working for a major rotating equipment supplier, machinery reliability engineer, and/or EPC

  • Experience with machinery design, production, and/or or servicing/repair of turbo-machinery products

  • Familiarity and experience with industry standards such as ASME and API

  • Experience with Lean Methodologies
