About the Job:

As a senior engineering leader you will be responsible for leading an engineering strategy that helps us grow our business in a new segment. You will manage and hire senior engineers and tech leads to build an effective team to execute against the strategy. You will work with product teams to understand business needs and help convert it into technical roadmap. You will also be responsible for the timeline and impact of the projects. Any experience in project planning and management will be an added benefit.


  • Hire and grow a team of Senior Engineers and Tech Leads

  • Working with product managers, customers to translate their requests into an execution strategy

  • Scoping business and product requirements into technical roadmaps

  • Collaborate with senior engineers and architects to review technical roadmaps

  • Project planning and management is a bonus

  • Strong executive communication and promotes cross functional collaboration

  • Develops career growth plan for ICs

  • Takes business level initiatives that helps us achieve better execution or drive meaningful revenue growth


  • A solid engineering background with at least 4+ years

  • 3+ years experience in engineering management

  • Experience working with product management teams

  • Understanding and experience working with agile techniques and tools

  • Technical depth: Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, Angular, Obj-C/Swift or Java/Kotlin is a big plus

About the Role We're looking for an experienced engineering manager to grow and lead our team of engineers responsible for building all of The Athletic's web, iOS, Android, and API. You will report to the CTO and work cross-functionally with product management, data science, design and marketing teams to prioritize projects, manage the engineering team, and become a valued decision-maker within the company. Responsibilities * Lead the engineering team as they deliver high-quality performant software in a fast-paced, high-growth environment * Make technical and hiring decisions to meet anticipated demands * Evaluate trade-offs and effectively prioritize tasks within the team in alignment with strategic initiatives and company goals * Collaborate closely with product, data science, design/UI and marketing to define strategy and execute on the roadmap * Coordinate and deliver web and mobile product releases * Hold regular 1:1s, evaluate performance, and provide consistent productive feedback * Help & mentor engineers to learn the skills needed to advance in their career Requirements * 3+ years experience managing and leading an engineering team * Experience leading a team building web, iOS and Android products * Direct experience scaling a small team to a medium/large team highly desired * Prior experience working with/supporting PHP & MySQL desired * Enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment * Passion for sports is understandable, but not required * Role will be based out of our San Francisco headquarters The Company is backed by Founders Fund, Evolution Media, Courtside Ventures, Comcast Ventures, Bedrock Capital, Advancit Capital, Y Combinator, and other leading investors.
