Huntsman is seeking an Engineering Manager supporting the Performance Products Division located in Freeport, Texas. This position will report to the Plant Manager

Job Scope

This role provides strategic leadership and direction to the Freeport Ethyleneamines Engineering Team to achieve safe, reliable, and profitable operations. The Engineering Manager is accountable for routine maintenance, outages/pitstops, turnarounds, and CAPEX execution, as well as the Reliability Program. As a member of the site leadership team, this role is responsible for the administration, planning, coordination, and implementation of the reliability strategy and maintenance, in alignment with the strategic objectives of the site and the business aligned production plans.

As the Engineering Manager your roles and responsibilities will be:

  • Ensures safe reliable maintenance activities through visible leadership, recognition, expectation setting, coaching, and development of the team.

  • Partners with the Operations Manager to cost effectively deliver reliable assets that produce to customer demand while ensuring a risk based approach to maintenance demand, turnaround scope, project development, and cost management. Makes risks and benefits visible to decision-makers and the front line.

  • Accountable for safe and cost effective maintenance to improve reliability and minimize plant and equipment downtime. Provides leadership for ensuring the development of plant and equipment maintenance and spares strategies. Champions the maintenance work process from notification to planning/scheduling to execution, with team members to support both preventive and reactive maintenance, routine and non-routine maintenance.

  • Assures day to day activities in the plant through the effective leadership of his team, specifically the Reliability/Rotating Equipment Engineer, Maintenance Supervisor, Maintenance Engineer, TA Manager, Warehouse Coordinator, and Maintenance and Engineering Analyst, while also developing and implementing work processes and strategic initiatives to keep the plant competitive and address gaps. Utilizes key performance metrics (leading and lagging) to drive performance across all accountable areas.

  • Accountable for planning of identified outage and turnaround scope and execution of safe turnarounds utilizing site or contract experienced TA leaders to execute the Turnaround work process.

  • Partners with Technical Manager on reliability and technical support to Maintenance (e.g., I&E, CSE, Inspection, Fixed Equipment, and Projects). This includes creation of PM plans, equipment criticality, maintenance scope development, bad actor program, threat and MOC management.

  • Process Safety Leader. Accountable for timely completion of incident investigations, MOCs, and recommended actions and ensures actions are fit for purpose, robust, and sustained.

  • Leads budgeting activities, cost reviews, forecasting of spend, and waste identification and elimination for Maintenance, which is the bulk of the non-personnel related spend for the site. Also works with Procurement teams to ensure we have fit for purpose contracts, work authorizations, and options in vendors to deliver efficient spend practices for indirect costs.

  • Highly effective in change management and communication, inspiring and empowering their teams to deliver objectives and exceed their own expectations.

  • Plays a key role in administration of "people" policies, hiring, promotions, performance management, and development for Maintenance. Develops, implements, and assures plant policies and procedures.

  • Leads with a learning mindset. Inquisitive, seeks to understand, asks why and what needs to be true for an incident-free operation. Understand the key role they play in the success of their team and the site and always seeks to be an enabler and supporter.

  • Must be able to stand in for the Plant Manager for emergency management or where immediate action is required.

  • This role has 6 direct reports with 1 Supervisor who gives direction to the craft team (Huntsman and nested) and this department is accountable for approximately one third of the site personnel (Huntsman direct and nested contractors), including the Main Mechanical contract.

  • Manages annual budget for Maintenance (excluding personnel costs) of approximately $10 Mln and a ~$13Mln turnaround every 2 years.

  • Accountable to coach and develop Maintenance Team, as well as encourage causal thinking and learning from incidents. Ensures coaching and recognition is documented and built into performance discussions at all levels.

  • Essential functions require presence in the workplace on a regular basis and an ability to work extra hours if needed.

Required Qualifications:

You must possess the below minimum qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.

The candidate must have an unrestricted right to work for Huntsman in the United States.

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in science related field, but chemical or mechanical engineering preferred.

  • 10+ years in industrial environment; petrochemical experience preferred

  • Experienced people leader (3+ years with direct reports)

  • Experienced Maintenance and Engineering Supervisor or Manager (with additional Turnaround and CAPEX leadership or management preferred). Must not be first leadership role.

Specific Skills and Knowledge

  • Must have a solid understanding of safety, environmental, and process safety requirements.

  • Must have strong understanding of the Maintenance and Projects work processes and the use of KPIs to drive performance

  • Requires a broad knowledge of engineering principles governing petrochemical operations. Must have extensive background in plant operations and equipment.

  • Must have high technical and analytical abilities to handle reliability challenges and plant compliance concerns with quick diagnosis and prompt decisions.

  • Must have the ability to motivate and influence people.

  • Team player who has good communication and diplomacy skills with plant employees (company and contractors), corporate service partners, and customers.

  • Good knowledge and practical experience of continuous improvement techniques and programme implementation.

  • Good understanding of broader business processes required to underpin the performance of a manufacturing asset.

  • The personal ability to set, refine and challenge goals and objectives in order to maximize value for all stakeholders.

  • Excellent risk based decision making skills.

  • Initiative taker who performs consistently and effectively in difficult situations.

  • Must have a level of proficiency with Internet, Email, Microsoft, CMMS programs (SAP preferred) as well as openness to IT solutions that improve efficiency, accuracy, and safety.
