PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITES The Engineering Manager organizes, plans, controls, and leads a skilled team of design/project engineers and designers engaged in the design and development of new and/or modified company products in accordance with customer specifications, established company engineering policies, and government/industry standards. The manager is responsible for the technical aspects of new and legacy products within an assigned segment of business operations. The manager is also responsible for supporting Sales and Marketing efforts, resolving technical problems, and providing technical support to Operations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES - other duties may be assigned

  • Maintain overall technical ownership/authority and lead the team engaged in the design and development of company products in accordance with customer requirements, specifications, and company policies.

  • Facilitate the communication and interaction among the team members and those outside the team by advocating and fostering cross-functional teamwork using team-based management and leadership concepts, such as open communication, concurrent engineering, and continuous improvement.

  • Plan, organize, schedule, and manage activities, and provide technical guidance to the team in the design and development of new products or the improvement of legacy products. This includes various engineering development activities to ensure that the goals, objectives, and deliverables of each program/project are accomplished.

  • Participate in activities to enhance the engineering department efficiency and productivity with a focus on improving product development speed and overall time to market. This may include conducting technical studies to develop improved and state-of-the-art engineering techniques, processes, policies, and standards in areas such as the design process, documentation, testing, fabrication methodology, and transfer to production.

  • Responsible for supporting the sale and marketing of company products by analyzing customer requirements, providing special technical analyses, and resolving special customer problems and requirements. In addition, work closely with the product team, Sales and Marketing, and customers to develop innovative, cost effective, producible product design solutions.

  • Participate in activities to enhance company productivity and improve overall company performance with a focus on improving speed and overall time to market to continue Hartwell's reputation as a value-added partner.

  • Provide timely technical guidance and support to Operations on production issues with new and legacy products, and provide assistance in resolving difficult technical problems.

  • Assist in the preparation of periodic design meetings in accordance with the contract and/or other program or company requirements.

  • Determine the direction of highly complex design solutions and make decisions on standard and complex design approaches.

  • Review, analyze, and interpret the technical and administrative requirements contained in requests for proposal (RFP), requests for quotation (RFQ), requests for information (RFI), information for bid (IFB), etc., to prepare material used in the preparation of formal responses.

  • Write, edit, and review technical proposals in response to a RFP, RFQ, RFI, and IFB. Identify program tasks and prepare associated cost estimates.

  • Build and lead a dynamic team, and set the pace and example as the leader. Provide employee coaching, mentoring, and training and development to further build and strengthen the culture of the team.

  • Conduct performance appraisals, and provide recommendations on personnel placement, discipline, and wage increases.

  • Provide input to the engineering department CAPEX and expense budgets.

  • Assist in the preparation and managing of engineering manpower requirements.

  • Support the development of long and short-term goals and objectives within the engineering department and ensure they are aligned with the overall company goals and objectives.

  • Work with Operations to ensure product designs are producible (design for manufacturability).

  • Identify new and/or opportunistic applications and ideas in addition to cultivating relationships with current and target customers. Create innovative and proprietary technology and product platforms using focused resources and cross-functional teamwork.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • To conform to U.S. export control regulations, applicant should be eligible for any required authorizations from the U.S. Government.

  • Proficient in spoken and written English

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) from four-year College or university in Mechanical Engineering. Advanced engineering degree is desirable; and

  • Minimum of twelve (12) years of product design experience; minimum eight (8) years of engineering project management experience and six (6) years of engineering management experience supervising technical professionals; and

  • Experience leading engineering teams responsible for designing engineered products for customers; and

  • Demonstrated experience resolving technical problems associated with company products, managing multiple technical projects, and working with customer personnel in defining design parameters; and

  • Experience working with metallic materials, metal fabrication processes, and metallic material finishing; and/or

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have demonstrated professional knowledge of engineering principles and have strong analytical skills.

  • Must have demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills and techniques (people/team management, influence management, negotiation, assertiveness, and conflict resolution).

  • Must be able to resolve technical problems associated with company products, manage multiple technical projects simultaneously, and work with customer personnel in defining design parameters.

  • Must have extensive problem solving, critical and logical thinking, and creativity skills.

  • Must be highly self-motivated, results oriented, able to work without supervision, and produce consistent, accurate, timely work.

  • Ability to identify project/program risks and communicate project/program goals and requirements.

  • Must be a committed team player and be a strong advocate for and actively foster cross-functional teamwork (concurrent engineering) within the company.

  • Must have a high level of comprehension and numerical intelligence (analytical), and an ability to communicate both written and verbally at a high level.

  • Must be detail-oriented with solid organizational skills.

  • Must have superior computer skills, including experience with MS Office products and 3D CAD/CAE. Knowledge of SolidWorks is preferred.

  • Knowledge of SolidWorks PDM is desirable.

  • Must have an in-depth understanding of drawing requirements and standards, such as Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

  • General knowledge of company operations; including scheduling, procurement, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems.

  • General knowledge of marketing principles.

  • Ability to understand, track, drill-down, and question activities and issues, and make sound business decisions based upon the data gathered.
