Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

  • 3 years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience.

  • Hands-on programming experience in one of the following: Java, C++ or Python.

Preferred qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science or closely related degree.

  • 10 years of relevant industry experience, with 5 years of hands-on technical leadership and people management experience (managing teams of 8 or more developers).

  • Large scale systems design experience.

  • Manage a team of software engineers, including task planning and code reviews.

  • Drive technical projects and provide leadership in an innovative and fast-paced environment.

  • Take responsibility for the overall planning, execution and success of complex technical projects.

  • Contribute technically to projects.

  • Work closely with product management team to ensure we're building the best products.

Position Summary Reporting to the Head of Vector Engineering, the Scientist (I/II/Senior) will work with others in the Vector Engineering team to implement cutting-edge AAV technology to improve efficacy, potency, safety and production of rAAV vectors. This role will place special emphasis on the design, production and evaluation of novel AAV capsids towards specific desired biological and physiological properties. Responsibilities: * Provide scientific leadership and define experimental strategy for the design, generation and characterization of novel AAV capsids to drive the company's research and development goals * Execute viral studies, both rAAV and Adenovirus, that drive the company's research and development goals * Assist with the design and construction of rAAV vectors * Perform and develop molecular assays as required * Establish and manage relationships with external academic groups and CROs * Coordinate in vivo experiments internally or directly with CROs * Must demonstrate a keen knowledge of experimental design, underlying scientific principles and the ability to analyze and assess results * Collaborate with the Cell Line Development, Nonclinical, Process Development and Analytical Development teams on research studies * Work within cross-functional teams to drive novel programs forward towards IND filing * Prepare, analyze, and present data internally and externally * Prepare and review technical reports and write research operating protocols (ROPs) Qualifications * PhD in Virology, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline with applicable academic or industrial experience in capsid engineering * Experience in mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, immunoassays, flow cytometry, qPCR and RT-qPCR methods * Experience working with primary human cells is a plus * Experience in the development of complex biological assays * Experience with statistical analysis software (GraphPad Prism, R, JMP, SAS) is preferred * Experience working with external contract labs (CMOs, CROs) is a plus * Should be highly motivated, have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to multitask in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities * Ability to lead, mentor and execute effectively in a collaborative team environment where results are achieved through influence and the incorporation of multiple points of view * Proven ability to work independently and effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules and deadlines #LI-CZ1 Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
