A/B tests are the fundamental building block for product decision-making at Airbnb. Our A/B testing platform, the Experiment Reporting Framework, automates experiment setup, assignment, delivery, and analysis, making experimentation easy and fast. Our platform is used by over 60% of all engineers, data scientists, and product managers every week, across every major product area at the company, with more than thousands of experiments in flight at any given time.

As Engineering Manager for the team, you will:

  • Lead a team in building a genuinely full-stack experimentation platform

  • Work with a diverse set of technologies including JVM services for assignment and identity resolution; metrics computation pipelines built on Spark, Hive, Presto, and Druid; a Rails/JS user interface; and iOS/Android clients for mobile integration

  • Partner with the Data Science Team to design and deploy more sophisticated statistical experimentation methodologies

  • Work with product and business leaders to champion the organization's experimentation needs and speed up product iteration across the entire company

For this role, we value engineering managers who have:

  • 5+ years of relevant engineering work experience, including 2+ years of hands-on technical management experience (required)

  • A demonstrated passion for working with data at scale and empowering organizations through data

  • A full-stack background, including at least two of: Python development, data infrastructure, frontend (Rails/JS), or mobile

  • Exceptional coding abilities and experience with architectural patterns of large, data-intensive applications

  • Actively mentored team members in their careers

  • Been actively involved in setting product strategy

The team's expertise spans domains including causal inference, survey methodology, machine learning, cryptography, neuroscience and record linkage. This managerial role encompasses leading and supporting a high-performing research science team focused on causal inference and experimentation, as well as broader org responsibilities. This will entail building scientifically rigorous systems that enable marketers to improve the efficiency of their advertising spend by understanding the overall causal impact and what actions they should take to improve their performance. RESEARCH SCIENTIST MANAGER - CAUSAL INFERENCE AND EXPERIMENTATION RESPONSIBILITIES * Hire and lead highly skilled research scientists, providing mentorship and career guidance to members of the team Foster innovation and prioritize across specific opportunities to build new and improve existing causal inference systems for marketers Shepherd the team's research and development projects, ensuring high-quality communication across diverse audiences, and taking responsibility for the team's long-term product impact Build cross-functional relationships with Engineering, Product and Analytics teams to shape long-term roadmaps with a balance of scientific rigor and strategic considerations Manage the development of conference presentations, patent applications, white papers and publications that are broadly appealing and accessible beyond a core scientific audience MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * PhD in a quantitative field such as statistics, physics, economics or political science and 3+ years of experience in data science or research science, or MS degree with 7+ years of experience in data science or research science 2+ years of product development experience 2+ years of experience in leading and developing scientific teams, including performance management and recruiting Knowledge in R, Python or Julia leveraging large (TB) datasets Knowledge in causal inference and experimentation, including addressing challenges from incomplete, unrepresentative, mislabeled and observational data Proven track record of innovation and strategic focus Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.
