Engineering Manager, Data Infrastructure

Data represents the voice of Airbnb's users at scale. The mission of the team is to build leverage for Airbnb through trustworthy data. Data Infrastructure team is to provide efficient, reliable, salable and secure foundational infrastructure for the collection, management and analysis of data to support teams to make data-driven decisions and empower data-intensive applications. The infrastructure has the following pieces:

  • Workflow Orchestration: The team is to provide a fully managed workflow orchestration service that empowers data owners to author, test, schedule, and monitor pipelines.

  • Stream Infrastructure: The team is to provide a fully managed infrastructure to empower application developers to ingest, process, and analyze event streams in real-time

  • Data Warehouse Infra: The team is to provide scalable, reliable and secure infrastructure to manage, store and compute large-scale dataset for modern data warehousing in a cost efficient way.

  • Data Governance: The team is to provide end to end solution to ensure Data Warehouse can meet regulatory compliance with industry standard best practices.


  • As the first line technical and people leader, Engineering Manager, Data Infrastructure, oversees one or multiple sub-teams within Data Infrastructure.

  • Work with other Airbnb leaders to design and execute the long term strategy for Data Infrastructure at Airbnb.

  • Empower Airbnb's Data Infrastructure team to achieve a high level of technical productivity, reliability and ownership.

  • Recruit great engineers, in collaboration with Airbnb's recruiting team.

  • Develop engineers on the team, helping them advance in their careers.

  • Contribute to engineering-wide initiatives as a member of Airbnb's engineering management team.

Minimum requirements:

  • 2+ years of management experience, 7+ years of work experience in the big data domain.

  • Experience with architectural patterns of large, high-scale data infrastructure.

  • Exceptional understanding of distributed systems, data stores, and data modeling.

  • Experience with building and managing complicated data pipelines in production.

  • A demonstrated passion for working on and empowering organizations through scalable and stable infrastructure.

  • Track record in partnering with recruiting to build incredible engineering teams.

  • Independently started self-sustaining teams
