GDIT is seeking an Engineering Lab Technician to support our work at the National Institutes of Health's Center for Information Technology. The Signal Processing and Instrumentation Section (SPIS) provides the NIH Intramural Research Program (IRP) with electrical, electronic, electro-optical, biomedical, mechanical, computer, and software engineering expertise. The majority of SPIS activities require first-of-a-kind instrumentation design, software development (both for instrument control and signal analysis), and in-house fabrication, in laboratories and clinics.

As the central, on-campus, engineering resource within the IRP, the broad range of SPIS engineering knowledge and experience establishes a strong infrastructure fostering interdisciplinary, multi-investigator, cross-Institute technology incubators and high-risk high-reward research. The majority of SPIS activities require first-of-a-kind instrumentation design, software development (both for instrument control and signal analysis), in-house fabrication, and overall collaborative validation in laboratories and clinics.

With 40+ active projects, SPIS has collaborated with 18 NIH Institutes and Centers on technology and methodology development projects. These collaborations support NIH research initiatives, including: systems biology, genomics, proteomics, bioimaging, precision medicine, brain, and neuroscience. In-house capabilities and accomplishments have established SPIS as an engineering focal point that strengthens the IRP interactive environment facilitating science through successive iterations of theory development, experimentation, and design innovation.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS:

  • Soldering together prototype circuits, drilling into small sheets of metal, and cutting small sheets of aluminum with a saw or laser cutter

  • Operate and maintain machinery (circuit board plotter, 3D printers, CNC mill, laser cutter)

  • Fabricate and assemble mechanical designs

  • Basic or small design projects

  • Assist engineers with testing, installation, and/or debugging of systems

  • General lab maintenance and organization

  • Maintain inventory and order essential supplies for machinery and prototyping

  • Educate/ensure staff safety compliance for general lab and specific machines

  • Electronic and mechanical troubleshooting

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Associates degree and one year related experience or the equivalent; trade/technical school graduate or military avionics/communication training would be looked on favorably

  • Good understanding of basic concepts of electrical voltage, resistance, capacitance, and current,

  • Hands on electronic and mechanical troubleshooting.

  • Experience working on an electronics breadboard and/or wire wrapping for prototype circuit boards.

  • Experience with a signal generator that produces sine wave or square wave output

  • Experience with computer-aided design software (training on the particular package used will be available)

  • Experience with 3D printer (training on the particular package used will be available)

Desired Qualifications and

Skills:
  • Basic programming skills/concepts
  • Python or C preferred
  • Electronics test equipment (scope, function generators, etc)
  • Experience with Maker movement
  • Arduino or Raspberry Pi microcomputer

ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS:

  • Ability to function well in a small team environment

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

SUMMARY:

  • The position is based on site at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
