We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Lab Manager at General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) located in our San Diego, CA office. This position typically reports to a technical manager and is responsible for the planning, managing and technical performance of an engineering unit.


  • Lead activities for safe and efficient management of engineering labs including planning and managing performance to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained.

  • Ensure all GA-EMS labs follow a consistent process by managing Hazard work authorizations, managing schedules, and lab staff, reordering supplies, Electrostatic Discharge mitigation, maintenance of equipment, calibration of tools and general upkeep.

  • Implement current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business, and financial objectives for the engineering unit and may also participate in the development of Group/Company objectives.

  • Manage GA-EMS lab equipment and/or customers lab equipment by providing appropriate documentation records.

  • Interact internally with engineering team and/or with suppliers, vendors or customers to share information and for basic problem resolution. May act as primary contact for engineering lab activities.

  • Ensure machinery, equipment, and tools are well maintained.

  • Identify manufacturing issues and provide leadership in developing solutions.

  • May participate in the preparation of proposals, business plans, proposal work statements and specifications, operating budgets and financial terms/conditions of contract(s).

  • Ensure technical leadership and excellence is maintained in the labs by participating in the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required management, professional, and technical talent.

  • Lead progress review sessions to discuss cost, schedule, and lab performance.

  • Identify engineering issues and provide leadership in developing solutions such as re-allocation of resources or modifying contract specifications.

  • May participate in the development of new business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities.

  • Manage the development of and ensure the security of the unit's proprietary technology, and maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • May be responsible for decisions that impact the unit where erroneous recommendations could cause schedule delays and allocation of additional resources.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in business administration, engineering or a related discipline and nine or more years of progressively complex manufacturing experience with at least three of those years managing manufacturing operations. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

  • Demonstrates knowledge in the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory and practice as required for lab management, as well as project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.

  • Must have lab management experience.

  • Must possess the ability to resolve management and technical problems. Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives. Customer focused, must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment, and able to work extended hours and travel as required.

  • U.S. citizenship is required.

  • An active DoD Secret Security Clearance is desired.

The two hospitals and the Outpatient Pavilion account for 39 operating rooms, a full suite of advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment and over 850 licensed patient beds within 1.1 million square feet of healthcare facilities. Department operates a Central Plant providing Steam, Chilled Water, Emergency Power and 12 KV Normal Power Distribution. Position Summary Plans, directs, and coordinates activities concerned with maintenance, repair, design, modification, and replacement of equipment and machinery in hospital facilities by upholding responsibilities and performing duties personally or through subordinates. Under limited supervision, directs, supervises, and monitors the Engineering operation and maintenance staff. Ensures efficient and reliable operation of all machinery, electrical and plumbing systems within the hospital campus. Assists in the formulation of plans, policies and procedures to implement or comply with The Joint Commission standards, regional directives, applicable codes and good hospital engineering practice.
