Job Title Engineering Intern I Technical

Position Summary

Work closely with senior engineers in the creation of exciting and innovative technologies. You will have direct exposure to various fields through working with industry experts on a multi-disciplinary team. Primary Activities and

Responsibilities:
  • Assist lead engineers in the research and development of next generation technologies

  • Conduct design analysis under the supervision of senior engineers

  • Complete hardware testing and evaluate the results against requirements

  • Perform a wide variety of tasks to gain familiarity with the engineering staff, methods, programs and practices

Electrical Engineering: Interest in RF, Analog and digital circuit design.

Introduction to test equipment (Spectrum Analyzers, Scalar/Network Analyzers, Signal Sources, Oscilloscope). Troubleshoots and diagnoses malfunctions in existing products or systems and makes modifications as needed. Analyzes, develops and recommends design approaches. Exposure to schematic capture and PCB layout design tools.

Firmware Engineering: Interest in developing VHDL and Verilog FPGA designs.

Applications include Signal Processing, Real-time State Machines, Waveform Generation, and High-speed Interfaces. Development or modification of Intellectual Property (IP) blocks. Perform simulation of implementations and validate with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and signal integrity analyzers.

Software Engineering: Interest in design, development, analysis, testing and debugging of computer software applications and/or systems running on embedded Linux platforms.

Completion of documentation and procedures for installation and maintenance of deployed applications. Experience in one or more of the following languages: Java, C/C++, or Python.

Mechanical Engineering: Interest in highly integrated electromechanical solutions.

Model assemblies in PTC Creo (Pro E) and AutoCAD design suites. Thermal analysis with ANSYS Icepack fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver. Work with our machinists in our on-site metal fabrication shop. Conduct product environmental qualifications including: vibration, shock, thermal, altitude, and corrosive environments.

Systems Engineering: Interest with the analysis, design, development and implementation of new and/or existing systems/sub-systems.

May include Architectural Design, Requirements Engineering, and Lifecycle Management. Work with our senior staff on the integration of our products within the overall deployment platform.

  • Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of college level education

  • Overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

  • Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related technical field

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work in a team environment or on independent assignments

The intern will perform meaningful work in support of the organization. Guidance will be provided using SRR processes and procedures. Interns will prepare and present a final project to the SRR management team summarizing conclusions about the experience, impacts delivered and relevance for their future career. This assignment is for the Tank Farm Systems Engineering Services group. The Ventilation Systems Intern will support Ventilation System Group with problem solving of chronic and emergent ventilation issues, mathematical modeling of ventilation processes and simulation runs, database management of the Ventilation support tools, produce design changes (DCF/DCP) for approval, management of monthly systems health reports. Knowledge Areas- Thermodynamics, heat transfer, incompressible and compressible flow, Microsoft Excel, FileMaker Pro Practical Experience- Engineering technician in power plant or industrial environment, previous internship in Engineering Industry. Additional Information: The internship will run for a 12-week period from May 20, 2019 until August 8, 2019. Housing is not provided but reasonable rentals are available through the University of South Carolina-Aiken student housing office. A 40-hour work week is set and scheduled by the individual departments. SRS utilizes various work schedules including 5/8s (8 hours/day; five days per week), 4/10s (10 hours/day; four days per week), etc. Each work day has a 30-minute lunch. Interns will be paid a competitive hourly rate; no summer interns will be assigned to shift work; overtime is not available; Interns will be paid for site holidays (Memorial Day, July 4) as applicable. Assignments will be located in SRR facilities on the 300sq mile DOE site outside of Aiken SC. Public transportation is not available and interns will be required to arrange their own transportation. A valid Driver's License, Registration and proof of automobile insurance is required for driving on the Savannah River Site. If you are selected to participate in the SRR internship program, additional information will be requested such as: SRR employment application, references and official transcripts. You will be assigned to SRS General Employee Training and Drug and Alcohol test appointments before badging and commencement of assignment.
