This position is located within Lincoln National Forest. Incumbent operates and maintains 3 or more pieces of engineering heavy equipment. Up to but not exceeding twenty percent (20%) this position as equipment operator is required to participate in firefighting activities such as operating equipment or working in fire camp on a fire assignment.

, backhoes, motor graders, loaders, excavators and other heavy gasoline or diesel powered wheeled or crawler type engineering and construction equipment. Duties will include the excavation, backfilling, and grading of construction materials to specifications as required on such projects as roads, ditches, campgrounds, minor and major culverts and other construction projects.
Work will be performed in a variety of settings including mountains with steep, rocky terrain. Operates specialized equipment used in road construction and maintenance and operates a dump truck and semi-truck with trailer with maximum GCVWR of 80,000 lbs. and may reach up to 120,000 lbs. to haul specialized equipment. Assures agency safety rules and policies are complied with, limits of safe equipment operation are not exceeded and all tools are properly used. Other duties may include placement of concrete low water crossings, construction of boat ramps, erecting fences, rough carpentry and other miscellaneous construction work.
Possess the ability to read blueprints, use a hand level and to understand, and read construction grading stakes.
Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments on automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment. Reports major mechanical repairs to supervisor. Services equipment, makes equipment inspections, and maintains proper records.

WORK CAPACITY TEST (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters: This position participates in wildland firefighting activities.
Based on the type of work performed, TAKING and PASSING the WCT at the MODERATE level is a "condition of employment." The Moderate fitness (Field) test requires completing a two (2) mile hike within thirty (30) minutes, while carrying a twenty-five (25) pound pack.
