Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related technical field or equivalent practical experience.

  • 15 years of experience in engineering, with experience in technical innovation.

  • Experience with Machine Learning (i.e., recommendations, ranking, or search).

Preferred qualifications:

  • PhD In Computer Science.

  • Experience growing and leading a large and dynamic team of Machine Learning engineers.

  • Direct experience with product application of Machine Learning technologies.

  • Experience researching in the area of Machine Learning.

  • Experience with successful execution in a highly competitive environment.

About the job

YouTube Shorts is a short-form video platform that allows users to create, watch, and share short videos. It is designed specifically for mobile consumption and has a vertical format that is optimized for viewing on smartphones. The Director of Engineering will lead YouTube Shorts Discovery. You will have a deep understanding of the mobile video landscape and experience in product innovation. You will be responsible for leading a team of engineers in developing new features and experiences for YouTube Shorts. You will also utilize an understanding of the YouTube ecosystem and be able to work effectively with other teams across the company and partner cross-functionally.

YouTube Shorts is a rapidly growing platform with a huge potential. You will help YouTube Shorts reach its full potential and become a leader in the short-form video market. You will lead and be at the forefront of innovation for recommendation systems for YouTube Shorts. You will be working with an incredibly talented team, solving technical problems. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $323,000-$465,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Grow top-line engagement metrics, such as shorts engaged users.

  • Grow top-line creator/creation metrics, both by inspiring creation and by helping creators find their audience.

  • Grow entire new ecosystems within the context of shorts.

  • Develop key product and functional arcs within the shorts context (e.g. trends).

  • Be responsible for the use of YouTube resources (i.e., GCUs and TPUs). Optimize resource allocation for YouTube's computational infrastructure, including its GCUs and TPUs, to ensure efficient and responsible utilization.
