Job Description

Responsible for quoting, designing, innovating and documenting of the companys product using sound engineering principles and practices. Performs engineering assignments with clear and specified objectives including timely development of drawings, bill of materials, instructions, etc. meeting the company and customer design standards, adds new components in the ERP system. Work is reviewed by Sr. Engineers or peers for the application of sound professional judgment.

The Engineering Designer is responsible for preparing equipment or material specifications and may be involved in developing new products for any SRP division.

Must be familiar with design procedures and a variety of manufacturing processes such as plastic molding and metal fabrication. Ability to design using computer aided, CAD, 3D, preferred Solidworks. Assures compliance with design and manufacturing requirements, federal guidelines and customer requirements. Assignments require the investigation of a limited number of variables and supervisory assistance is provided on unusual problems. May coordinate the work of designers and other technical support personnel.

This position requires initiative; will work independently and the associate must possess a strong desire to learn. This engineering position could include project management and must have ability to perform assigned task with minimum direction.

This position requires professional and prudent communications both internally and externally working in a team environment with a diverse group of associates, customers, suppliers, and subcontractors.

Job may require light traveling to visit sites, overtime and a flexible schedule, reporting early and working late including weekends from time to time.

Essential Duties and


  • Creating 2D, 3D models of assemblies, BOMs, and shop drawings using Solidworks or CAD software
  • Building and testing prototypes, working with contractors or vendors as needed
  • Assisting with materials pricing, vendor selection, and project estimating as well as customer quoting
  • Evaluating current designs for cost-cutting and implementing easier or more efficient manufacturing methods
  • Performing calculations to support proper material sizing and selection
  • Performs analysis of designs to ensure that all internal and external standards are met including calculations, forces and loads.
  • Maintains all complete bill of materials in the company ERP system
  • Assist in developing and maintaining company design standards to streamline the engineering process for each project

Education and Experience:

Engineering degree will receive highest consideration (BSME, BS MET, or Civil/structural background preferred), directly-related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree

Minimum 2 years of experience in an
Engineering / Design positionRequired:
The applicant must have 2D and 3D modeling experience, with a minimum 500 hours plus using Solidworks. Pro-E, Microstation, AutoCAD or similar experience also helpful.

Required: Experience in creating shop drawings, working with document libraries, knowledge of welding and metal fabrication. Experience with Microsoft Word & Excel is required.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Must be hands-on willing to spend time in the manufacturing or prototyping areas

Ability to interact with a diverse population of disciplines including factory workers, supervisors, managers and customer

Experience in any of the following areas is a plus: roto-molded plastics design, New Product Development (research, design, specification, procurement, documentation), Finite Element Analysis (FEA), machine design

Desired but not essential: ability to perform structural analyses on steel frame structures, familiarity with building codes, aluminum casting design, experience using a Product Data Management library and ERP system

Southwire owns a unique system called Southwire Continuous Rod(CSR).  This system provides more than half of the copper rod continuous casting capability in the world.  We are searching for an innovative Automation Engineer to develop automation and control systems for continuous melting, casting and rolling of copper or aluminum rod. In this role, the Automation Engineer will design and program logic for PLCs, drive systems, and combustion control systems. They will also develop Supervisory control and data acquisition element and operator interface applications.</p> <p>Other projects will focus on designing databases and writing custom computer programs for SCR systems, applying standard procedures to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical components, diagnose and resolve issues. You would also create project manuals and electrical schematics using CAD.</p> <p>This Automation Engineer will so work on requests for quotes for the build and design of electrical systems. They would become the Subject Matter Expert in all aspects of the SCR systems such as fluid systems, operations, metallurgy, maintenance, material handling, furnace systems, and hands-on machine operation. Assist with national and international on-site commissioning of all parts of an SCR system to include training, discussions, presentations, and startup assistance.</p> <p><br /> <strong>Qualifications and Experience Requirements:</strong></p> <ul> <li>A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field is required</li> <li>3+ years of related industrial experience, such as continuous molten metal processing equipment, AC and DC drives, PLC’S, combustion systems, design, maintenance and/or operation (or similar industry).</li> <li>Allen Bradley or Siemens PLC and drive experience.
