Performs inspections and contract monitoring on capital improvement projects and other public works construction projects.  Tests, evaluates and documents the quality, performance and acceptability of a variety of construction materials in the field and laboratory.

  • Plans, coordinates and inspects public work projects, land development projects and City improvement projects including water, sewer, irrigation and storm drain installations for the assurance of MAG and City engineering design and construction standards compliance.

  • Works closely with Project Managers and Civil Engineers providing consultation, feedback concerning updates, quantities, RFI's, change orders and project progress.

  • Analyzes and interacts with sponsoring department staff determining he intent of the projects and scope of work.

  • Coordinates the development of the scope of work for assigned projects, providing direction and clarity to contractors.

  • Assists in managing the work of outside consultants by participating in preliminary project design review and conducts pre-construction meetings.

  • Reviews project schedules; investigates and resolves schedule conflicts on capital improvement projects.  Reviews and provides necessary feedback during contract change order requests and proposed additions/deletions to contracts through out process, gather quantities, reviews pay apps from contractors and consultants; assists and conducts project progress meetings and project conferences.

  • Provides technical direction and assistance and project updates to department staff.

  • Provides direction, updates and assistance to city staff, developers and consultants regarding engineering land development projects.

  • Responds to and resolves citizen inquiries and complaints regarding engineering projects.

  • Monitors contractor's performance, implements conflict resolutions and establishes good relationships for project continuity.

  • Reads, interprets and reviews approved land development and City improvement project plan sets and contract specifications and details.

  • Performs material testing and sampling and coordinates materials testing with engineering consultant and geo technical agencies.

  • Trains, leads and assists Engineering Inspectors on land development and City improvement projects as well as trains and leads contract inspectors assuring city inspection protocol and expectations.  Reviews contract inspectors dailies and quantities for accuracy and acceptance.

  • Issues notices to comply and stop work orders to contractors for governing specification adherence.

  • Reviews as-builts for accuracy and acceptance and assists in permit termination for certification of occupancy.

  • Assumes the duties of supervisor as necessary.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

One year of college course work in engineering, engineering inspections or a related field and five years experience in Public Works construction inspections.

Read and interpret drawings and specifications and prepare clear and accurate reports, cost estimates and other correspondence

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with city employees and the general public

Concurrently schedule multiple engineering inspections with multiple contractors

Perform moderately complex calculations relating to measurement and construction surveying

Perform standard testing procedures on soils, asphaltic concrete and Portland cement concrete to analyze results and take appropriate action

Monitor and inspect multiple projects and priorities, resolve routine disputes and arrive at sound decisions based upon engineering criteria, policy and procedures Follow oral and written instructions

Employ practical applications of mathematics, trigonometry and geometry

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Arizona driver's license

Possession of Nuclear ARRA gauge certification within 6 months of hire

Possession of ACI field certification with 6 months of hire

Possession of ATTI field certification within 6 months of hire
