Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Position Summary:

  • Multiple positions available in our HQ location and in our District I office located in Topeka, KS.

  • KDOT is recruiting for Engineers in Field and Office positions.

  • Learn and experience the details of designing major projects by becoming a member of a design team at Headquarters in Topeka.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

BUREAU OF TRANSPORTATION PLANNING:

The Models and Forecasting EA I position prepares traffic forecasts and transportation studies, develop travel demand models of urban and urbanized areas in Kansas. The position develops and reviews traffic simulation to analyze in-depth travel patterns and capacity. This position would have a significant role with transportation planning processes, corridor studies and economic impact analyzes.

FIELD CONSTRUCTION:

The Engineering Associate (EA) is assigned to an Area Engineer's office and receives on-the job training consisting of construction inspection, and district and area offices orientation. The employee performs such duties as surveying, staking right-of-way, checking computations, calculating final pay quantities on construction projects, and inspection of work performed by contractors by reviewing construction and applicable specifications.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING SECTION(3):

Complete traffic engineering studies and make recommendations to address crash patterns and improve safety. Recommendations are on appropriate intersection control (stop conditions, traffic signals, roundabouts, R-CUTS), geometric improvements (turn lanes and other designs), signing (warning signs), speed limits, school zones, pavement marking, and street/interchange lighting to improve safety.

Manage intersection projects (signalization, turn lanes, roundabouts, R-CUTS, and other designs) seeking to address identified crash patterns.

PERMANENT SIGNING:

Involved in plan development and review of permanent signing along the state highway system (K, US, I routes). Work on high performance signing projects which updates signing to maintain required retro-reflectivity thresholds, work on commemorative/memorial signing recognizing individuals, and make decisions on what attractions get signed.

STRUCTURES AND GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES (3):

SOILS LAB: The Engineering Associate (EA) will mentor under the supervision of Lab and Field Professional Engineers and the Chief Geotechnical Engineer. The employee will learn drilling and sampling techniques, in-situ soil tests, laboratory testing procedures, analysis of field and laboratory data, and eventually performing projects under the supervision of an engineer. Employees will utilize CADD, Bluebeam software, and specialized geotechnical software. EA's for the geotechnical section will be stationed in Topeka with up to 30 percent overnight travel.

BRIDGE INSPECTION: The Bridge Inspection EA I will perform bridge inspections, review bridge inspections performed by others, and lead discussions at Area Review Meetings. The employee will participate in the inspection of field light towers. Duties include climbing, crawling, walking or using access equipment to look at each structure.

BRIDGE EVALUATION: The Bridge Evaluation EA I will perform analysis and date management work for Local Rationg Section of the Bridge Evaluation and management group, all within the requirements of the Manual of Bridge Evaluation, AASHTO LRFD Design Specification, FHWA guidelines and Kansas Statutes.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid drivers license upon hire

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree from an ABET (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology) accredited engineering school.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Civil Engineering

  • Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) or EIT Certificate obtained

Post-Offer/Pre-employment Requirements

  • This position is subject to pre-employment physical testing. The selected candidate will be required to pass the screening as a condition of employment.
