The essential duties for this job include:

  • Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.

  • Creates detailed PS&E.

  • May serve as a lead worker.

  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education.

  • Performs design computations and plan preparations to include preparing plan sheets for construction projects.

  • Performs engineering calculations for plan quantities as part of PS&E preparation activities.

  • Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.

  • Performs engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.

  • Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation and analysis activities.

  • Performs research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.

  • Prepares and checks plans, specifications and estimates (PS&E) and designs.

  • Reviews engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and industry standards and guidelines.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Education

This job requires the following:

Work Experience

This job requires the following:

  • Engineering in related as defined in one of the Other Conditions below:

  • Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent

  • No supervisory experience required.

  • Master's degree in engineering or a Master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree and experience.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

  • Engineer In Training-Certified

  • Safety Impact Certificate

  • Valid Driver's License at time of Application

Safety Impact Certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact, Commercial Driver and/or Vessel Crewmember certification(s) will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

Other Conditions:

  • All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the EA program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program ( EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment. Failure to comply with all terms of the Program Agreement will result in reclassification.

  • Degree in engineering which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) plus one (1) year engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

  • Degree in engineering technology which has been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

  • Degree in mathematical, physical or engineering science approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

  • Degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) but has been approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Conditions of Employment

Conditions for this Position: Standards of Employment

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety impact and vessel crewmember positions. Commercial drivers, safety impact employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

  • Must be able to report for duty within 1 hour of notification on a 24-hour basis.
