Engineering Assistant I/Ii

Central San, a progressive public utility, is seeking an Engineering Assistant I/II.  This is a frontline permit counter position.

 The incumbent will meet with design professionals, contractors, and the general public regarding sewer information, site development procedures, plan submittal procedures and requirements, permit fees, and processing procedures.  Duties require extensive public contact, issuing of sewer repair and construction permits, updating information in the computerized permit system, and collaborating with other work groups.  The ideal candidate should enjoy providing excellent customer service while working at a permit counter in fast-paced team environment.

Typical responsibilities may include:

• Assisting the general public in person, by phone, or e-mail; answering inquiries related to a variety of permit requirements and associated fees.

• Processing and reviewing permit applications for compliance and accuracy; issuing permits; providing information relating to permit and project status.

• Using computerized permit tracking system to enter permit information.

• Providing information regarding standards, procedures, and conformance with District codes.

• Conducting technical research for the public and outside agencies using Laserfiche, plans, and related files; compiling historical and current data.

• Calculating, estimating, and collecting fees for plan review, sewer construction, and other related fees.  Recording and balancing permit-related monetary transactions and issuing receipts.

Experience:

I: One (1) year of full-time experience in engineering support, drafting, inspection, planning, or GIS work.

II: Two (2) years of full-time experience in engineering support, drafting, inspection, planning, or GIS work including eighteen months of experience equivalent to that of an Engineering Assistant I at the District.

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. College level coursework in engineering, geography, mathematics, or a related field is highly desirable.

Substitution:

Completion of 12 units  of coursework from an accredited college or university in either engineering, environmental science, water/wastewater or a related field may substitute for one year of the  required experience.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California Driver's License.  A valid out-of-state driver's license will be accepted during the application process. Must possess a valid California Driver's License within 90 days of appointment.

The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.  Human Resources shall determine the examination steps to be used for this recruitment.

 The steps may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, practical examination, application screening, and/or oral board examination.  One or more of these steps may be used and in any order.  At the end of the testing process, candidates passing all of the examination steps will have their names placed on an eligibility list.

 The list is valid for six months and may be extended up to an additional six months at the request of the hiring department.  The list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification.

Successful candidates not currently employed in regular status by the District must pass a pre-employment physical to be considered for appointment.
