The essential duties for this job include:

Engineering Assistant I

  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.

  • Applies principles, methods and techniques of engineering technology to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.

  • Assists in performing construction inspections.

  • Assists in research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.

  • Learns to perform survey activities.

  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education.

  • Perform engineering-related duties in the field of transportation engineering.

  • Prepares routine plan sheets for construction projects.

  • Uses automated roadway programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Engineering Assistant II

  • Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.

  • Performs engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.

  • Performs engineering-related planning, design, data collection, evaluation and analysis activities.

  • Uses automated roadway/structural or hydraulic design programs and computer assisted design/engineering systems.

  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation.

  • Drives to collect engineering data at project sites.

  • Assists in performing material sampling and testing.

  • Assist in research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.

  • Assist with traffic analysis and data collections.

  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education.

  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Engineering Assistant III

In addition to the Duties of Engineering Assistant II:

  • Assists in training less experienced engineering assistants, specialists and technicians.

  • Performs construction inspection and material sampling/testing.

  • Performs research and problem solving of engineering-related problems

  • Performs traffic analysis and data collection.

  • Reviews engineering work for calculation errors and compliance with applicable federal and state laws and industry standards and guidelines.

  • Actively prepares for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams and completion/maintenance of required documentation

  • Applies engineering principles, methods and techniques to a wide variety of transportation-related activities.

  • Drives and collects engineering data at project sites.

  • Participates in Career Development for the Engineering Assistants program which includes job rotation, training and continuing education.

Education

Engineering Assistant I, II or III

  • Bachelor's Degree in accordance with one of the Other Conditions below:

Work Experience

This job requires the following:

Engineering Assistant I:

  • No work experience required

  • No supervisory experience required

Engineering Assistant II:

  • engineering in related as defined in one of the Other Conditions below:
  • (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
  • No supervisory experience required

Engineering Assistant III:

  • One (1) year engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers
  • (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
  • No Supervisory Experience Required

Master's degree in engineering or a Master of engineering degree from an institution that offers a bachelor of science degree, in the same discipline, which has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) may substitute for a Bachelor's degree and experience.

Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

Engineering Assistant I

  • Safety Impact Certificate

  • Valide Driver's License

Other Conditions:

  • All employees classified as Engineering Assistants are required to participate in the EA program. Participation in the Engineering Assistant Career Development Program (EACDP) requires that employees sign a Program Agreement, which outlines employee responsibilities and service time commitment. Failure to comply with all terms of the Program Agreement will result in reclassification.

  • Degree in mathematical, physical or engineering science.

  • Degree in engineering which has not been accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC/ABET) but has been approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers plus four (4) years engineering related experience applicable to gaining licensure as an engineer by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

  • This is a Safety impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Conditions of Employment

Standards of Employment

  • Safety Impact certification is not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.

  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact position. Safety impact employees will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

  • Required to work weekends and holidays.

  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirement
