The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region is looking for a Engineering Assistant Flex 1/2/3 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Salary Information

Engineering Assistant 1 - $30.31 hourly

Engineering Assistant 2 - $34.93 hourly

Engineering Assistant 3 - $39.93 hourly

What you will be doing:

As part of the Right-of-Way (ROW) Engineering staff, you will be responsible for the accurate production of plans, plats and legal descriptions for airport and highway ROW acquisition and provide engineering support to the Appraisal, Negotiation, and Property Management Sections within ROW as well as providing surveying and ROW support to DOT Design and Construction Divisions.

You will make determinations regarding existing airport and highway rights of way based on public land orders, departmental orders, executive orders, and historical records. Be responsible for the design and development of right of way plans, parcel maps, and legal descriptions. Coordinate and manage multiple diverse tasks with competing schedules involving design, construction, maintenance, public information, ROW acquisition, and administration of Consultant ROW mapping contracts and deliverables.

Stewardship of our highways corridors and airport properties are the responsibility of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities' Right of Way Section.  We work to manage these assets and acquire land interests necessary to expand these systems through construction projects. As a Right of Way Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 you will be crucial in assisting the department's mission to "Keep Alaska Moving through service and infrastructure".

The position is at the Central Region Headquarters building on Lake Hood (4111 Aviation Ave.), off International Airport Road in Anchorage. Office hours are flexible and allow for short work weeks in accordance with established policies. As a side benefit you will have easy access to bike & walking trails around Lake Hood.

Special Note:

Valid Driver's License Required.

Requires occasional travel within the State (normally 1-2 trips per year) with infrequent need for overnight stays.

Engineering Assistant 1

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:

An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2

Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:

Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Special Note:

The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.

Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

Engineering Assistant 3

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:

Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, Engineering Assistant 2, or Engineering Assistant 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience.

The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
