The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is recruiting for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 [Concurrent Review Engineer] to join our team in the Southcoast Region Construction Section and help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Engineering Assistant 1

Under direct supervision of the Regional Quality Assurance Engineer, perform a variety of basic engineering duties by selecting and applying accepted standard engineering principles and practices to the construction of roadways, bridges, utilities, airports, harbor facilities, and other engineering projects.

Perform office engineering duties on all Southcoast Region construction projects by evaluating documentation systems for Capital Improvement Program projects during and after construction. Review quantity calculations and contractor payments for conformance to project plans and specifications, to departmental requirements and to standard accounting practice. Assist in the preparation of construction contract reports and estimates.

Engineering Assistant2

Under general supervision of the Regional Quality Assurance Engineer, perform a variety of basic engineering duties by selecting and applying accepted standard engineering principles and practices to the construction of roadways, bridges, utilities, airports, harbor facilities, and other engineering projects.

Perform office engineering duties on all Southcoast Region construction projects by evaluating documentation systems for Capital Improvement Program projects during and after construction. Review quantity calculations and contractor payments for conformance to project plans and specifications, to departmental requirements and to standard accounting practice. Assist in the preparation of construction contract reports and estimates.

Engineering Assistant3

Under minimal supervision of the Regional Quality Assurance Engineer, perform a variety of basic engineering duties by selecting and applying accepted standard engineering principles and practices to the construction of roadways, bridges, utilities, airports, harbor facilities, and other engineering projects.

Perform office engineering duties on all Southcoast Region construction projects by evaluating documentation systems for Capital Improvement Program projects during and after construction. Review quantity calculations and contractor payments for conformance to project plans and specifications, to departmental requirements and to standard accounting practice. Prepare and issue construction contract reports and estimates.

Where you will work

This position reports to the DOT&PF, Southcoast Region, 7-mile office located in Juneau, Alaska. Southeast Alaska is an area of unique habitats surrounded by temperate rainforests on steep-sided mountains, glaciers and marine waters to present abundant recreational opportunities.

The region's coastal environment and topography make for unique construction solutions on projects ranging from small local street/highway projects to marine terminal work and improvements at regional airports. The position requires an ability to read and interpret design plans and specifications and developing well thought out engineering solutions onsite when necessary. Who we are looking for

Our successful candidate will possess the following competencies:

  • Experience reading and interpreting permits, regulations, statutes and departmental policy and procedurerelated to environmental compliance on state or federally funded projects;

  • Experience reading, reviewing, and interpreting engineering plans, construction contract language, technical engineering reports and design specifications;

  • Good communication skills (oral and written) and an ability to build relationships through problem solving, documentation and good rapport;

  • Ability to evaluate and critique construction project records to assure contract requirements, department guidance, and relevant laws have been satisfied;

  • Experience creating source documentation supporting contractor payment. Examples include the documentation of daily progress, construction progress estimates, quantity summary calculation sheet, documentation of quantity measurements, analysis of contract time extension requests, and much more.

Engineering Assistant 1

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:

An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.

Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2

Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

AND

One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:

Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Special Note:

The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.

Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

Engineering Assistant 3

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

AND

Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:

Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

SALARY INFORMATION

Base salary for:

  • Engineering Assistant 1 .. $30.15/hour

  • Engineering Assistant 2 . $34.74/hour

  • Engineering Assistant 3 $39.72/hour

The position can help interpret Internet Service Provider (ISP) bids and communications that assist libraries in advocating for themselves. The incumbent will contribute to making the State Library's historical digital materials available to the world by creating records in Alaska's Digital Archives, ArchivesSpace and other systems.
