The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:

As an Engineering Assistant 1 with DOT&PF CR D&ES Highway Design, you will work under the direction of a registered professional engineer performing a variety of engineering duties, such as: applying accepted and standard engineering practices associated with the location, design and construction of highway, traffic and other civil engineering projects. You will be a member of a team tasked with developing designs and bid-ready documents for highway-related transportation projects ranging in complexity. You will have the opportunity to travel to projects within southcentral Alaska and may be required to occasionally travel to remote communities in small aircraft.

The working environment you can expect:

Your office will be located at 4111 Aviation Avenue, Anchorage, AK. This work location allows you many options to live and play near a wide range of fantastic outdoor areas and urban community activities.

You will be working from the DOT&PF Anchorage Headquarters building. Office hours are flexible and allow for short work weeks and telework options in accordance with established department policies. This position requires limited travel within the state, primarily southcentral Alaska.

Trips are typically day-trips occurring once a month. This is a Long Term, Non-Permanent (LTNP) position. It is currently authorized through December 31, 2026.

  • Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems.

  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral and written presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

  • Accountability: Holds self and others accountable for measurable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.

    Determines objectives, sets priorities, and delegates work. Accepts responsibility for own actions and decisions. Complies with established control systems and rules.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with courtesy, sensitivity, and respect. Considers and responds appropriately to the needs and feelings of different people in different situations.

Special Note:

Valid Driver's License not required but is preferred.

Position requires travel to rural/remote communities via small aircraft. Trips are typically day-trips occurring once a month.

Passing of the Fundamental of Engineering (FE) exam is preferred but not required.

Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:

A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:

An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree.
