Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Perform simple engineering-related support tasks, including, researching and interpreting engineering documents, performing computations, managing data, compiling data for reports; and process/create orders for the Electrical Service Representatives. The Engineering Aide position will review all submitted plans for completeness which includes Riser diagrams, load calculation, Site plan, metered service location, customer information as well as other necessary plans. The Engineering Aides will also reach out to the customer requesting missing diagrams, load calculations, riser diagrams and other information to process the service request.

Those in this position will need to be able to create reports for the supervisors.

Job Responsibilities:

Duties include:

  • Reviewing customer submitted application for electrical services

  • Research and interpret customer submitted engineering documents and records.

  • Create Service Requests and Work Orders in the Work and Asset Management System (WAMS)

program.

  • Research various internal programs for additional information (CCB, Current View-TLA)

  • Contact customers for additional information and or resubmittal of plans.

  • Prepare electronic summaries, reports, graphs, sketches, drawings, plans, and work orders /

instructions for projects and for inspectors and crews.

  • Update and maintains data files and records via computer.

  • Maintain detailed accounting of work completed and report project status to appropriate service

representative.

  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

  • Perform relief cashiering duties.

  • Respond to customer's telephone, written, or in-person inquiries.

  • Assist in staffing main incoming phone line.

  • Assist customers with the On-Line Application process.

Qualifications:
Education: Satisfactory completion of high school mathematics including trigonometry (or a combination of education and experience).

Experience: Which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class. Possess ability to interpret and update engineering documents and records such as maps, surveys, drawings and traffic data.

Certification/License: Washington State Driver's License

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience performing work similar or equivalent to Engineering Aide duties.

  • Experience in coaching customers either walk-in or on the phone, in processing the service application for electrical service.

  • Experience providing hands on assistance to Engineers, Electrical Service Representatives working on complex electric service installations and/or electrical distribution systems.

  • Experience working with computer applications such as the Work and Asset Management System (WAMS), Customer Care Billing system (CCB), or similar applications and any cashiering programs.

  • Project management experience with strong attention to detail.

  • Ability to apply critical thinking when reviewing and assessing technical information.

  • Ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with home owners, developers, architects, engineers, contractors, and representatives from other government agencies.

  • Ability to work independently under time constraints, stress, and while managing multiple customer requests at the same time.

  • Ability to develop, cultivate and function as a critical team member within the Customer Engineering Unit.

  • Ability to reset priorities while maintaining a high level of customer service.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize incoming work

  • Ability to perform cashier related duties and pass a background check.

  • Ability to perform administrative type duties, including answer customer telephone and in-person inquiries
