The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region, is looking for an Engineer/Architect 1 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What you will be doing:

This position provides the opportunity to learn the fascinating world of aviation design on-the-job. You will work in the Central Region Aviation Design Group where you will assist a Project Manager to develop federally funded capital improvement projects for small to medium state-owned airports throughout central and western Alaska, managing and coordinating the planning, design, and ultimate success of projects to reconstruct or improve these essential airports, as well as other airports that enhance the lives of communities throughout central and western Alaska . You will be trained to negotiate contracts with engineering consultants and will represent the Department's goals and priorities as they prepare plan, specification, and estimate packages for bid. You will help oversee project design by reviewing engineering submittals for quality, completeness, engineering judgement, and conformity with federal and Department standards; and by coordinating technical issues with other groups within the Department (e.g. utilities, right-of-way, materials, environmental, and surveying). Your responsibilities will also include developing project scopes; reviewing airport planning documents; and estimating and tracking project costs, budgets and schedules. You will advise other Department functional group staff on federal and state airport design standards and requirements.

The working environment you can expect:

This position resides in the DOT&PF Central Region Headquarters building at 4111 Aviation Avenue, located on the shore of the beautiful Lake Hood Seaplane Base near Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, and is easily accessible by a paved multi-use path and bus routes 40 and 65. The standard work week is 37.5 hours with schedule options that allow additional days off. The Department also has a flexible telework policy to allow employees to perform their job duties at an alternate location. Travel is occasionally necessary, rarely overnight, and may include flying to remote communities in small single-engine aircraft.

Minimum Qualifications

Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
