Your Opportunity

As an Associate Engineer you will work with close guidance and supervision on tasks and smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of a senior engineer. You will participate in the evaluation, recommendation, and specification of engineered systems or products for a project. You will assist in verifying compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards/practices.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Design of transmission lines and structures using 3-D CAD software

  • Develop bill of material for construction

  • Develop construction specifications and provide support during construction

  • Work closely and support Senior Engineers on large scale transmission line projects

  • Attend field meetings to gather project information

  • Maintain a safe work conditions both in the office and on the job site

  • Obtain project permit requirements from environmental, governmental and local municipalities

  • Gain knowledge of industry standards and power delivery design principles as related to transmission and distribution

  • Gain knowledge of plan and profiles, general structural arrangements, load trees, material standards & specifications, equipment specifications (including, but not limited to insulators and line hardware); power plans, conduit plans, cable schedules and system studies

  • Develop discipline specific engineering and technical standards, practices, procedures and techniques

  • Attend client interactions and project status meetings

  • Participate in project planning meetings and reviews

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the senior engineering staff

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Basic understanding of drafting/design tool such as AutoCAD.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn on the job, an interest in learning about the utility industry.

  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks.

  • Ability to take direction, follow process and accept feedback and suggestions from senior engineers/designers.

  • Skilled at conducting preliminary research.

  • Field experience is considered an asset.

  • Sound technical skills, with focus on accurate design calculations and analysis.

  • Strong desire to learn and work in a team environment.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Willingness to work on multiple jobs/projects at a time.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use standard computer applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical Engineering.

Minimum of 0-2 years of experience.

EIT/FE eligibility or registration as a EIT.

Co-op/Internship experience preferred.

Must have a driver's license.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

The Lead Engineer- Substation Equipment will provide subject matter expertise to all regions of Duke Energy's Transmission system. As a Lead Engineer in the Transmission Asset Management- Equipment Strategy group, responsibilities include: developing cost effective maintenance practices and programs to support equipment reliability, ensuring maintenance programs meet compliance to regulatory requirements, and promptly addressing equipment advisories impacting safety and reliability. This position is for a Lead Engineer within the Transmission Asset Management- Equipment Engineering- Equipment Strategy group. The mission of this group is to maximize the life cycle value and performance of assets through Preventive Maintenance and System Reliability Programs. The Lead Engineer will be a subject matter expert (SME) for Transmission Substation Equipment including substation structures, mechanical oil spill equipment, switches, instrument transformers, arresters, capacitors, and provide backup support for power transformers and power circuit breakers. The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently. Responsibilities Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to: * Provide SME support to Asset Management, Construction & Maintenance, Engineering, and Resource & Project Management for assigned Substation Equipment for all regions. * Lead ONETransmission vision for the development and maintenance of enterprise common Preventive Maintenance strategies, tasks, frequencies, and technical procedures. * Develop and maintain equipment construction, commissioning, and testing documents. * Develop System Reliability Programs to address equipment performance issues, vendor service advisories, and end of life concerns. * Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis, * Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise, * Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment, * Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects, * Applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position, * Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to area of assignment, * Remains abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment, * Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities, * Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills, * Maintains accurate records and files, * Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally, and * Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.
