Job Overview

The Staff Software Engineer at Macy's Technology leads the design and development of cross-functional, multi-platform application systems. They translate business requirements into well-engineered, tested, and deployed application systems and support these systems in production. They work with internal customers to determine the most efficient and cost-effective approaches to meet business requirements. This involves designing, developing, testing, installing, and deploying the necessary software applications. They create solutions using a variety of software technologies, including writing new code, modifying existing modules, and configuring or implementing packages. They also perform other assigned duties as assigned.

What You Will Do

  • Lead the development of the strategy and technical design for large projects. Define timelines and project plans, analyze and estimate feasibility, cost, time, and compatibility with hardware and other programs, and ensure expected application performance levels are achieved.

  • Commit to overall deliverables with customers and management.

  • Recommend vendors for projects, negotiate terms and conditions with them, and support the evaluation of new technical directions and approaches, providing recommendations to Macy's Technology senior management.

  • Lead the coding, configuration, testing, implementation, and documentation of solutions and develop detailed design specifications.

  • Perform complex application programming activities, including coding, testing, debugging, documentation, maintenance, and modification of complex application programs.

  • Monitor and establish the operating efficiency of existing application systems, provide or arrange for proactive maintenance, and lead the resolution of customer inquiries.

  • Serve as a coach and mentor to junior developers, delegating and managing tasks as appropriate.

  • Act as a technical expert on existing applications and other related systems and applications.

  • Design systems and applications with high complexity, such as those involving many interfaces, multiple packages, and platforms.

  • Evaluate the applicability of leading-edge technologies and use this information to significantly influence future business strategies.

  • Incorporate technical and business systems knowledge and ideas from external sources into IT work.

  • Consistently demonstrate regular, dependable attendance and punctuality.

Skills You Will Need

Technical Leadership and Strategy Development: Leading the development of strategies and technical designs for large, complex projects, including defining project timelines, creating detailed project plans, and analyzing feasibility, costs, and compatibility with hardware and software.

Software Design and Development: Proficiency in designing, developing, testing, installing, and deploying multi-platform application systems, including writing new code, modifying existing modules, and configuring or implementing software packages.

Programming Skills: 8-10 years of hands-on experience with Java Enterprise, Java application servers (Websphere, Weblogic, or JBOSS), and relational databases (Oracle, DB2, or SQL Server), as well as 3-5 years of experience with Web Services and Messaging Layer technologies (SOAP, REST, JAXB, JMS).

Technical Expertise: In-depth understanding of enterprise system technologies such as Java/J2EE, Spring, Hibernate, EMS, Kafka, JBoss, RDBMS, Cloud/Microservices, Caching, Secure Development Lifecycle, and Distributed Processing.

System and Application Design: Ability to design highly complex systems and applications with multiple interfaces and platforms, incorporating leading-edge technologies into business strategies.

Project Management: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and communicate timelines effectively, ensuring efficient project execution.

Vendor Management and Negotiation: Experience recommending vendors for projects, negotiating terms and conditions, and supporting the evaluation of new technical directions.

Problem Solving and Maintenance: Ability to monitor the efficiency of existing application systems, provide proactive maintenance, and resolve complex customer inquiries and technical issues.

Mentoring and Team Leadership: Experience mentoring junior developers, delegating tasks, and managing team performance to foster a productive and collaborative team environment.

Communication Skills: Ability to effectively share technical information and communicate technical issues and solutions to all levels of the business.
