Job Duties

Are you driven by innovation with a passion for design? The Bristol District is seeking professionals with design engineering interest to support the Virginia Department of Transportation in constructing new roadway designs to keep Virginia safe and moving!

As a Roadway Design Engineer, you will develop and review sub-components and complete roadway designs using automated engineering and design software from scoping to advertisement for a wide range of transportation projects. Compute quantities and prepare plan assemblies for project milestones from scoping to advertisement. Take appropriate action to resolve problems related to project design. Utilize VDOT's standards, specifications, policies and procedures in the development of transportation projects. Ensure deliverables are accurate and correct in content and demonstrates customer service and work habits that reflect the VDOT values.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences.

• Experience in roadway design criteria, construction methods, standards, specifications and materials.

• Experience applying design standards, specifications, policies and procedures.

• Experience applying civil engineering principles as they relate to roadway design and standard design technical knowledge.

• Skill in building networks and relationships with employees, field personnel, contractors, manufacturers and FHWA representatives.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include engineering and design software.

• Ability to plan and schedule work.

• Skill in delivering exemplary customer service

• Knowledge of principles of roadway safety that impact roadway standards and special designs.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in roadway design and project management for transportation projects.

• A combination of training, experience or education in Civil Engineering or related field desired.

• Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
