JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Quality Engineer is responsible for the planning and implementation of the investigation, testing, evaluation, corrective action planning, and reporting of returned customer product failures of Friction Brake, HVAC and Door System product lines for passenger rail transit vehicles.
Essential Functions
Perform component level failure analysis on mechanical and electrical equipment to support RMA (Return Material Authorization) and customer issues, interacting with many groups including Quality, Engineering, Software, and Field Services amongst others
Test and evaluate the mechanical and electrical characteristics of components to identify root cause of product failures.
Lead and/or participate in 8D Methodology for problem solving of customer complaints. Provide a comprehensive technical 8D Failure Analysis Reports (FAR) and recommend corrective actions based on the results of the analysis.
Lead the identification and implementation of containment measures, corrective actions, and preventive actions related to customer product failures.
Monitor and document failure trends for both formal customer complaints and internal Knorr-Brake engineering investigations, and actively participate in the dissemination of failure information to Knorr-Brake personnel, the car builder and transit customers as appropriate.
Support development of methods, processes, procedures and equipment that will improve the failure analysis process and/or reduce failures.
Monitor returned equipment (RMA) and failure data from both new and fielded systems, participate in product testing programs, coordinate failure analysis activities, generate failure analysis reports, contribute to design corrective actions.
Participate in product development and internal design reviews to assure that Quality considerations are included in the design process.
Lead, support, and regularly contribute to Failure Review Board (FRB) meetings with other members of the department.
Must understand and support relevant key performance indicators (KPIs), as defined in the goal tree.
Quality staff has ability to release and/or reject products received from our vendors/ suppliers or produced within plant. Quality staff has the final decision for the release of product to the customers.
Skills and Competencies
Must possess knowledge and practical understanding of brake, HVAC, Doors equipment or similar electromechanical equipment and principles.
Must possess the ability to understand engineering drawings, diagrams and schematics.
Has the ability to develop and implement Quality standards.
Is proactive and strategic thinking.
Has strong organization, interpersonal, and communication skills; confident to face customer or supplier, able to effectively lead teams.
Has the ability to influence others.
Understands KPS or lean behaviors and able to apply these to processes.
Experienced with APQP and relevant Quality control tools and processes, including knowledge of or education in Quality Engineering, design control, and verification and validation tools and methodologies.
Independently analyze and trend data, formulate and implement corrective actions to improve products, processes, and systems.
Experienced in Advanced Math, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MiniTab.
Capable of scheduling, planning, and program management.
Understands PFMEA (Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis).
Has advanced problem-solving skills.
Experienced in Metallurgy/Materials Testing and inspection/measuring machines and tools (ex. CMM, micrometers, calipers, gauges).
