Job Summary

This position is part of a team responsible for planning of the LIPA transmission system from 23kV through 345kV and overall coordination and compliance of elements on the bulk electric system with applicable reliability standards. This position offers challenging opportunities and problem solving scenarios where the engineer will be able to incorporate and observe his or her creative ideas come to fruition.

The transmission planning position pioneers the future by recommending, analyzing and integrating various cutting edge technologies into the system. On the job training and adequate guidance are provided to engineers as needed.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities (include and are not limited to):

  • Conduct complex power system design studies (load flow, short circuit, and stability) and financial analyses to compare different alternatives, while ensuring the LIPA transmission system from 23kV through 345kVis compliant with governing design criteria, including mandatory NERC Bulk Electric System (BES) requirements

  • Recommend the most cost effective transmission plans to meet applicable reliability performance requirements, to adequately serve existing and future electric load and to integrate resource power injections

  • Perform technical assessments in support of generation resource RFPs (Request for Proposal) and various resource and transmission interconnection projects

  • Conduct long-range transmission studies including study of new capacity resources resulting in annual capital construction programs and system improvement projects and recommend changes to the existing transmission system

  • Perform, oversee and approve system impact studies of merchant generation and transmission project proposals and municipal delivery requirements, which may impact the power system

  • Evaluate proposed / new NERC Standards and continuously monitor for upcoming changes to existing NERC Standards

  • Support various regulatory efforts, such as: responses to FERC technical notices involving the Transmission System, LIPA management audits and NERC compliance audits

  • Perform near term seasonal operating studies and system operating limit analyses to support Transmission Operations

  • Active participation in New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) planning, compliance and interconnection processes and associated task forces / working groups

  • Responsible for closely working with NYISO, NPCC and other Transmission owners on behalf of LIPA Transmission planning to support regional initiatives and study efforts

Job Specific Qualifications

Required

BS degree in Electrical Engineering

Minimum 2 years of relevant engineering experience

Demonstrated analytical skills with attention to detail as well as planning and organizational skills

Proficient in MS Suite

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

Desire to handle challenging projects and the ability to quickly come up to speed is essential

This position may require driving to meetings on and off Long Island, a valid US drivers license with a safe driving history is required

Ability to respond to emergency storm and other conditions that may require work during nights and weekends

Desired

Masters, MBA or PE License

Knowledge of Python Programming

Knowledge of electric transmission, resource, substation, and distribution systems and equipment
