ENGINEER INTERN (MECHANICAL OR ELECTRICAL)

PRIMARY DUTIES

  • Under direct supervision, the Intern will work on a multi-discipline team of Engineers/Designers to support various types of project work, in support of specialty metals manufacturing, including machine design/modification, installation, and commissioning. In addition, the Intern will perform drafting duties that may include creation of new design/drawings and updating existing, development of schematics, layout drawings, and general assembly drawings in both AutoCAD Mechanical 2D and 3D (AutoCAD Inventor and/or Solidworks).

  • While working with engineers, the Intern will be given the opportunity to perform calculations commensurate with their course work as follows: Cooling water and compressed air flows, heat transfer, static and dynamic loads, stress and deflection of machine members and structural frames.

  • Support engineering project activities and tasks such as data collection, field measurements, project design meeting attendance, and ordering of parts and components.

  • The Intern will be required to learn and manipulate the main Engineering drawing file archive system (Adept).

  • Activities will be both within an office setting and a heavy industrial, manufacturing mill setting.

  • Appropriate safety training must be attended (provided by Carpenter) and adhered to.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Qualified students need to be currently enrolled in a college program and have a minimum 2.75 GPA to be considered.

  • Majors in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering

  • Knowledge or experience with AutoCAD, Inventor 2010 and AutoCAD Mechanical 2010 is preferred but not required.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project

  • Employment offers are contingent upon the successful completion of Carpenter's pre-employment selection process, which includes a drug and alcohol screen.

Major Responsibilities: * Observe and review current work methodologies over multiple iterations and multiple locations * Time and motion studies of targeted business / operational processes * Review and analysis of current system generated process performance metrics against observed process standards recorded * Analyze statistical data and time study results to determine logical and appropriate standards * Create data collection forms / materials / systems. Execute data collection assignments. * Data manipulation and analysis from system generated data, process observations, and other various data collections * Prepare presentations for executive level reviews * Recommend opportunities for business / operational process improvements and the impact to the business * Observe, report, and recommend improvement opportunities towards Safety, Human Factors, and Ergonomics * Other projects as assigned by the supervisor Qualifications: * Student should be pursuing Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering or similar program who is entering Sophomore , Junior, or Senior year * GPA of 3.0 or higher * Proficient understanding of the core Industrial Engineering fundamentals or similar engineering principles * Ability to interface professionally with all levels of the organization * Analytical skills / aptitude * Written and oral communication and presentation skills * Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint * Proficiency with Visio and Microsoft Access * Experience with Mini-Tab, or other statistical software is a plus * Willingness to travel, including overnight, up to approximately 25% * Able to Relocate to Reading, PA with a car for transportation * Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job * Willingness to travel as necessary, work the required schedule, work at the specific location required, complete Penske employment application, submit to a background investigation (to include past employment, education, and criminal history) and drug screening are required.
