Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.

NOTE: Applications will be accepted from persons who possess a current Engineer Intern Certificate in states other than Louisiana.

However, the applicant will be required to obtain a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate prior to appointment. The hiring agency will verify that all requirements are met.

To apply scholastic theory and elementary engineering skills to a variety of tasks involving standard procedures and practices in the field, office, or laboratory in order to acquire practical experience for licensure.

Entry.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Direct from a higher-level engineer.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Functional supervision may be exercised over Engineering Technicians.

LOCATION OF WORK:

May be used by all state agencies.

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from Engineer Intern Applicant by the presence of a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Differs from Engineer Intern 2 by the absence of independence when completing basic assignments.This position reports to the Equipment Engineer.  The incumbent assists the Plant Maintenance support team and the Equipment Engineer.  The incumbent assists the statewide expert in the development of equipment technical specifications.  Also assists with coordination with the Equipment Superintendents in each of the nine (9) districts on issues involving equipment management such as repair/replace decisions, complex repairs, and/or equipment modifications. The Department presently owns and operates a 6,000-piece fleet which has a replacement value of approximately $250 million statewide.  In this capacity, the employee must assist the Equipment Engineer by working with consultants, contractors, vendors, and operations and maintenance personnel.  Assists the Equipment Engineer in providing advice and consultation to maintenance and operations personnel on complex equipment management issues.  This includes comprehensive research of applicable state and federal laws, manufacturer specifications, and engineering analysis as required to make appropriate recommendations and/or direct work as appropriate.  
35%    Assists with development technical specifications for all equipment to be procured by the DOTD. Consults with other DOTD staff to determine needs and conducts extensive research on available equipment in order to develop technical specifications for bidding. Assists with development of the design and arranging for construction of  special equipment that is not available commercially in order to meet diverse needs of the DOTD.  
20%    Assists with coordination with the districts and sections utilizing the equipment to provide technical knowledge and expertise, and to ensure that any equipment acquired through the program meets the needs of the DOTD. Assists by consulting with equipment vendors to determine availability of specific concepts, design, or features on their product line that may be needed to meet DOTD needs, often providing feedback to vendors on specific mechanical, electrical or structural features and/or design modifications that are desirable to the DOTD as an end user of the equipment.  
15%    Assists with technical review of vendor submittals inclusive of plans and specifications for adherence to the DOTD technical specification, and provides recommendations on whether to award.  Consults with and provides guidance to vendors and equipment up-fitters in the final layout and fabrication of equipment.  Assists with reviewing drawings and sketches submitted by vendors and equipment up-fitters for accuracy, completeness and       conformance with technical specifications.  Attends meetings pertaining to equipment problems and assists with resolutions in an efficient and professional manner.  
15%    Works with the Engineer Technicians responsible for the activities associated with the Plant Maintenance module  of the DOTD's Maintenance Management System.  This module is used for the collection, reporting, and analysis of data on the Department's fleet and facilities.  Also assists staff with coordination of the annual Equipment Operator's Safety and Training Conference event.  
10%    Assists the Equipment Manager and his staff with other duties of the Equipment Section related to the fleet acquisition and buyback programs, equipment management, GPS monitoring, Equipment Operator Certification Program, and the Property Management Program.  
5%      May be required to perform other duties as needed including but no limited to natural disaster and emergency support activities.
