This position maybe filled at the Engineer III level or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon the selected candidate's experience.

This position will be accountable for the development of standards and controls related to advanced automation systems supporting grid edge controls, micro Scada aggregation, high speed switching systems, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the grid for both grid parallel and island modes. This includes the edge capabilities related to defined control areas such as microgrids and distributed intelligence/peer to peer controls. This role will support automation development within the team working with another automation engineer. The role will also support the operation of a Control Hardware in the Loop standards enterprise lab for modeling/testing advanced concepts. The role will be accountable for supporting the development of the Enterprise standards for grid monitoring, information exchange, and control for Distributed Energy Resources (DER). . This includes coordinating standard requirements and development of standards control interfaces with key internal stakeholders within Operational and Automation Standards, such as system protection, interconnection policy SMEs, project and design engineering within Distributed Energy Enablement & Storage, DCC Operations, and other key teammates. This position will have primary accountability for the development of standards related to automation controls outside the substation within Duke Power Grid Operations

This role is within the Advanced Planning/Grid Integration peer team within CD Operational and Automation Standards. The Advanced Planning/Grid Integration technical peer team within OAS is accountable for the technical standards development for DER Integration (Protection, Monitoring Interchange Control), Volt Var Control Strategy (Power Electronics, Traditional VVO Controls), and development of Control Hardware in the Loop.

Required/Basic Qualifications

• Engineer III

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

• 4 years of minimum required related experience

• A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Required/Basic Qualifications

• Senior Engineer

• Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer.

• A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

• Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Key Desired Qualifications

• Experience developing, modeling, and programming automation and control logic with utility/industrial scale automation controllers/systems

• Familiarity/experience utilizing and programming SEL RTACs

• Familiarity with IEEE 2030.5 Common California IOU Rule 21 Implementation Guide for Smart Inverters

• Familiarity with advanced control protocols such as IEC 61850, OpenFMB, DNP3.0

• Familiarly with communication transport and communication assisted schemes

• Familiarity with IEC 61131 programming language

• SCADA and advanced automation concept development/integration experience

• Experience with the development of peer to peer and distributed control intelligence capabilities

• Familiarity with advanced modeling & Control Hardware in the Loop systems (RTDS)

• Experience with factory acceptance/vendor OT device development and testing

• Technical Engineering team SME team leadership experience

• Familiarity with Distributed Energy Resource and secondary sources

• Power electronics integration/development experience

• Volt Var control integration/development experience (voltage regulation and capacitor controls)

• System Protection Design/Integration & System Coordination experience

• Electrical transient and grounding studies

• Major electric design project experience

• Technical Standards development

• Electrical component (utility operational technology control) testing experience, such as Omicron or Doble/Manta device testing

• Familiarity with IEEE 1547, IEEE 519, and other relevant technical standards

• Distribution Medium Voltage component integration/design experience

• New concept ideation, identification, scoping, and development experience

• Regulatory program technical development experience

• Experience as technical SME managing multi-faceted complex technical initiatives with major customer impacts/visibility

• Excellent written and oral communication skills

• Mastery of existing and emerging organizational technologies, issues, processes and practices
