The Solid Waste Division Facility Engineering and Science Section, Landfill Engineering Geology and Environmental Data unit (LEGEND) is recruiting for an enthusiastic team player in an Engineer II position. This is a great opportunity for an individual who enjoys working with smart, talented, and diverse team members to protect the environmental health of the closed landfills and the surrounding communities. This position has a direct impact on the division's ability to monitor air and water quality and comply with Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations.

About this Role:

The primary function is producing groundwater reports using environmental data. Key projects will include updating hydrogeologic reports and assisting with clean-up actions. This work impacts the communities around our landfills by monitoring and reporting on the quality of the groundwater near and on our sites.

The Facility Engineering and Science Section Landfill Engineering Geology and Environmental Data unit (LEGEND) is a small, collaborative, and dedicated team motivated by our goals to improve the environmental health of our closed landfills to protect the health and safety of our neighbors. We are scientists, engineers, and geologists with experiences that are unique and instrumental in the successful maintenance and monitoring of our closed landfills.

Job Duties:

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Provide project management assistance to the Engineer III for the closed landfill capital improvement program projects.

  • Provide review and comments on technical memorandums, work plans, sampling and analysis plans, quality assurance plans for environmental investigations, remedial investigations, and clean-up actions.

  • Assist in the production of groundwater reports for WAC-173-351 and WAC 173-304 landfills.

  • Review post-closure maintenance permits and assist in the production of compliance tasks and reports.

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, geology, hydrogeology, geochemistry, or closely related fields like earth and space sciences.

  • Knowledge of project management, contract administration, budgeting, and scheduling techniques and principles.

  • Experience working collaboratively with engineers and geologists to produce groundwater reports.

  • Ability to review reports and permits to determine compliance with WAC-173-351 and WAC 173-304.

  • Applicable skills using EarthSoft EQuIS for data entry and report generation.

  • Ability to work effectively in a rapidly evolving work environment that requires multi-tasking, planning, and organizing work daily, responding to changing priorities and tight deadlines, and grasping and responding to complex issues quickly.

  • Ability to take initiative and function independently on assigned projects, while keeping team members apprised of key issues and developments.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively in team settings and across department lines and with senior-level managers, supervisors, technical leads, and operations staff.

  • Demonstrated experience in effective communications with diverse groups of professionals, coworkers, and the general public.

  • Demonstrated small projects project management experience.

  • Experience using EQuIS and PRISM databases and project information management applications.

Special Requirements: The selected person will need a valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to travel throughout the County in a timely manner.

Working Conditions:

Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role will primarily work remotely from a home location, with onsite reporting requirements typically 1 day per quarter.

The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Common onsite locations include the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, 16650 228th Ave SE, Maple Valley, WA 98038, Bow Lake Recycling and Transfer Station, 18800 Orillia Rd S, Tukwila, WA 98188, and King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department's vision of Green Where We Work.

Remote Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance of King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.

Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.

Union Representation: This position is represented by PROTEC 17.
