Job Purpose
Responsible for developing current and future locomotive and stationary engine power assemblies. Responsible for integrating product design, performance and manufacturing through the use of design tools, engineering principles and test to meet product requirements. Maintains daily contact with engineering functions as programs are developed and finalized into production. Make decisions within the limits of general practices and standards with some direct guidance from supervisor.

Education / Training
Required:
BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent;
College level training in theory and practical aspects of applied mechanics, heat and mass transfer and its applications.
Preferred:
Key Job Elements
Gather and evaluate mechanical design requirements to develop conceptual solutions;
Create cost effective solutions for design of power assembly components including cylinder heads, liners, pistons, connecting rods and bearings;
Perform static and dynamic analysis of engine components;
Plan and implement experimental tests and/or development programs;
Develop and implement engineering designs;
Participate and lead solution of engineering related product problems (root cause investigation);
Provide technical direction to support personnel;
Work with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel, and others to implement cost reduction, process improvements, product improvements, and to support build programs;
Execute product plans;
Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations;
Stay abreast of new technology and competitive products;
Travel as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Required:
Four or more years' experience in the field of structural static and dynamic analysis/design;
Solid understanding of, and practical experience of designing highly engineered subsystems and their cross interactions;
Understanding of design / manufacturing processes;
Experience in design validation of mechanical components;
Experience in failure analysis of mechanical systems;
High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult with conflicting requirements & constraints;
Good oral and written communication skills;
High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others;
Self-starter capable of working with minimal supervision;
Flexibility to quickly adapt to changing assignments;
Ability to travel as required.
Preferred:
Experience in engine component design and analysis;
Experience in Unigraphics/NX & CAE tools;
Experience in MATLAB data analysis tools;
Previous locomotive familiarity and design experience.
