Job Purpose

The Liaison Engineer position will be based at the Locomotive Final Assembly plant in Muncie, IN. The engineer will work directly with Manufacturing to identify and resolve engineering design issues during the production process. Additionally, the engineer shall participate in design reviews and ensure design for manufacturability concepts have been utilized and match capabilities of the production line. The engineer shall coordinate current and future SD70 locomotive model engineering designs with manufacturing and maintain daily communication between Manufacturing and Design. The position shall drive cycle time reduction, increased capacity, and cost out benefits by improving the manufacturability of the designs provided by Locomotive Design Engineering teams for the SD70 locomotive platforms.

Education / Training

  • B.S. in Engineering or Engineering Technology or equivalent training;

  • Training in drafting and engineering drawing;

  • Proficient in CAD, preferably UG.

Key Job Elements

  • Participate in all SD70 locomotive model design reviews;

  • Identify any/all design issues which would negatively impact manufacturing;

  • Document and communicate manufacturing issues identified with design engineering;

  • Review and drive improvement in design and drawings created by engineering;

  • Match designs to manufacturing capabilities (internal or external suppliers);

  • Work with Suppliers & Supplier Quality to integrate supplier input into designs;

  • Analyze the total cost of assembling components to drive improved make/buy decisions;

  • Identify and facilitate standardization techniques at station level subsystems;

  • Use re-engineering data (Manufacturing Change Requests, Engineering Issues and Customer Feedback Issues) to drive improved designs and reduced rework;

  • Travel as required;

  • Simplify and standardize engineering drawing nomenclature.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to present information to team members, top management, customers;

  • Strong root cause problem-solving abilities and experience addressing complex technical problems;

  • Basic understanding of locomotive assembly and engineering design concepts;

  • Ability to lead cross-functional teams;

  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing concepts;

  • High level of mechanical and/or electrical aptitude;

  • Well developed computer skills: Word, Excel, LN;

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings;

  • Effective team building skills, good change manager;

  • Ability to travel as required.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

  • Strength
  • Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial

environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light- to medium- level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);

  • Motion
  • Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment;
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements
  • Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
  • Work Environment
  • Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an

industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE;

  • Emotional Demands
  • Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a

project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards. Domestic and international travel as required;

  • Safety
  • Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to

industrial areas.
