What part will you play?

  • GAF Energy is seeking a Product Engineer I to help develop next generation building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) technologies and products that harvest energy from rooftops and deliver customer satisfaction

  • This exciting role will report to the Product Engineering Manager, and work within a cross-functional team to develop solar technology platforms, components, and products that integrate seamlessly into roofs and deliver high energy production at a competitive cost

  • The ideal candidate is a maker and a designer. They must have a passion for engineering products that will change the world's energy infrastructure and thrive working in a fast-paced environment. With outstanding technical acumen and attention to detail, you can help us protect what matters most

  • This person is responsible for soliciting and managing the input of stakeholders in order to create optimized designs. They will conceive, design, build, procure, evaluate, and specify product solutions which they will refine through iteration

What will you be doing?

  • Nurture new concepts within the lab from ideation to initial product launch. Focusing on innovative new products for the home energy space

  • Design and hands-on fabrication of prototypes for rapid concept iteration.

  • Use creativity & problem solving skills to develop and refine product solutions. Contribute to defining requirements, generating concepts, determining evaluation metrics, building or procuring concept prototypes, and evaluating concept functionality.

  • Track and demonstrate that the designs meet product requirements (cost, quality, manufacturability, usability, reliability, etc.) Analyze components for optimization and to ensure functionality

  • Collaborate with other R&D teams, Compliance, Reliability, and Product Management, along with other cross-functional stakeholders throughout the development process.

  • Manage design projects, communicate schedules to stakeholders, and drive project to completion in a timely manner

What do we require from you?

  • Minimum of BS Degree in Mechanical, Industrial Engineering, or Industrial Design

  • 2 years of product design and development experience minimum

  • Must be able to be in office daily, some hybrid schedule may be considered.

  • Strong ability to use rapid prototyping techniques. Must be a hands-on "maker".

  • Must have woodworking/basic carpentry skills, those related to residential construction are preferred.

  • Must have sheetmetal fabrication skills. Welding and machining are preferred but not required.

  • Skills in other prototyping skills (3D printing, CNC equipment operation, molding, painting) are preferred.

  • Basic electrical skills and knowledge (both DC and AC systems) is preferred

  • A physics-based fundamentals approach to design. Capable with math, computational analysis.

  • Proficient user of Solidworks CAD. Experience with other systems (Fusion 360, Creo) may be considered.

  • Experience with Google Workspace (Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Slides) is a plus. Proficient user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) is also acceptable.

  • Ability to read and create technical documentation including manufacturing drawings. Working knowledge of GD&T is a plus but not required.

  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and designing parts for high volume processes. Knowledge of injection molding, thermoforming, lamination extrusion, sheet metal bending & stamping is a plus

  • Strong problem solving skills and an aptitude for learning systems quickly

  • Creative capacity for developing new ways to do things better, cheaper, faster

  • A can-do attitude

  • Willing and ability to spend a majority of the day in an R&D lab, pilot production environment or residential construction site (including being on rooftops).

  • Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external cross-functional teams verbally, in writing, and via presentations

Benefits and Compensation:

Individuals hired for this position can reasonably expect a base salary within the range of $90,000 - $120,000. The company provides comprehensive health and retirement savings plan benefits that support an employee's total well-being.
