We are currently seeking a Lab Technologist to join our team at Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, Georgia. This role is part of the Corrosion and Pretreatment Lab Group, working in collaboration with Corrosion and Surface Technologies Clusters to provide innovative product and process technologies testing in current and emerging markets for Novelis. With innovative facilities, the center plays a leading role in developing sophisticated materials and innovative technologies supporting Novelis customers and manufacturing plants worldwide. The center highlights a fully equipped coatings laboratory dedicated specifically to assessing alloy performance in acute conditions with different coatings and applications.

The Technologist is a key contributor to various research and development project passionate about advancing aluminum products for various markets. The incumbent will prepare test samples, monitor/ record specimen data and develop a detailed understanding of numerous test methods, including automotive and beverage standards. The successful candidate will develop an in-depth knowledge of specialized coatings testing and preparation, while providing technical expertise/support to routine and usually simple processes. The Technologist will work under close supervision in a collaborative environment where a manager will define tasks.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Perform day to day lab activities under supervision where tasks are defined by supervisor, project leader or senior technical staff

  • Carry out instructions within an existing work routine as determined by supervisor, identifying & reporting delays

  • Prepare samples for testing according to request or method specifications including cutting, pretreatment, bonding, etc.

  • Prepare documentation and report data to collaborators via Laboratory Information Management System.

  • Perform and develop a detailed understanding of routine tasks in the coatings' lab; developing specialization in this area.

  • Use equipment in a safe operating manner and in compliance with Novelis safety standards.

  • Responsible for the quality of assignments using the application of standard scientific practices, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.

  • Ensure Standard Operating Procedures and Quality System protocols are followed.

  • Develop and prepare Work Instructions and maintain documentation.

  • Work with team to identify improvements or modifications to equipment and processes to enhance effectiveness, accuracy, efficiency.

  • Complete priorities of work requests or tasks determined by supervisors.

  • Meets assigned project commitments, demonstrating an understanding of project timelines and work.

  • Accountable for identification and correction of hazards or unsafe practices in immediate work area or routine tasks or identify to supervisor or site EHS lead.

  • Communicate task updates to customers.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with work group and other internal functional areas.

  • Support departmental and business needs as vital and determined by leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS Degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or relevant field of study.

  • 2 years experience performing routine tasks in specific testing and sample preparation areas

  • Knowledge and understanding of good lab practices

  • Broad experience with measuring equipment, i.e., calipers, micrometer, and balances

  • Broad experience in the use of laboratory testing tools for evaluation and testing, i.e., small lab ovens, temperature, impact and others.

  • Mechanical proficiency and enjoys hands-on work

  • Knowledge of working with chemicals such as chemical handling and chemical mixing

  • Good EHS practices

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Proficiency with computers and their applications to collect, store, and analyze data and images (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.).

  • The skills for critical thinking, problem solving and attention to details

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some previous experience in a laboratory setting.

  • Experience with coatings testing (Adhesion, Thickness, Hardness, Cross-hatch, etc.) is a plus.

  • Experience with ISO 17025 or other recognized quality systems is preferable.
