Role Summary:

  • The Engineer, Function Testing is responsible for wide scope function testing (BEUS) activities at the Arizona Proving Grounds (APG), and supports with the future NAR engineering strategy.

  • The Engineer analyzes, reports electrical, as well as technical and software issues related to various systems of the vehicle. In addition, the role regularly interacts with multiple colleagues within VWGoA, VWAG and VWM to effectively support APG's diverse customer base from VW Group companies worldwide.

  • The role reports to the Sr. Manager, Durability Testing at the APG and it requires an advanced level of independence, initiative, decision making, as well as actively promote the company's vision of integrity by displaying a positive attitude and behavior within the working environment.

Role Responsibilities:

Functional Electronic Systems Testing - (60%)

  • Tests and analysis the integrity of the electronic build system based on latest software Verbund release (VBV)

  • Knowledge of vehicle software development timelines/plans

  • Test and analysis software development life cycle functionality requirement (test strategy, test plans and test execution)

  • Preforms test case evaluation (function test catalog) of vehicle electronics.

  • Knowledge of VW Product Development Plan (PEP) or similar knowledge of other OEM development plans.

  • Ensures that all whole car durability test vehicles are maintained with current level software and hardware.

  • Conduct on car vehicle testing to evaluate functionality robustness

  • Install, setup and configure network and standalone control devices for system testing

  • High level of collaboration between Function Principle Expert Engineer plus Development teams

  • Analysis on functional and system-side errors for (i.e. ORU, MOD, ADAS & Energy-Charging, App connect, Web apps etc.)

  • Define, plan and execute test procedures related to electronic systems testing

  • Collaborate with workshop technicians to diagnose and repair.

  • Maintains awareness of new electronic vehicle systems, VW Group electronic control systems and specific diagnosis tools and respective processes by attending workshops, receiving training and obtaining education as necessary

  • Performs "evaluation" drives to verify and analyze reported issues

  • Regularly takes part in special engineering Project House events.

  • Monitors and follow up with issues reported by test drivers, using the durability comments database.

  • Creates all KPM problem reports in strict adherence to the Q Gates requirements from VW Group Development departments which are necessary to properly forward reported issues to the responsible main department.

  • Communicates and supports all remote test stations regarding issues reported at those locations.

  • Participates in weekly conference calls between engineering departments APG, EPC, VW AG/ IECC regarding systems function testing.

  • Escalate vehicle testing problems found with the appropriate development teams and plan next steps.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV/HV) Testing - (40%)

  • Applies skill sets and knowledge acquired from High-Voltage Training and Certification (EFK) in an effort to properly fulfill testing requirements.

  • Utilizes HV training to problem solve Battery function related issues and collaborate with workshop technicians on repairs and findings.

  • Acts as the responsible BEV/HV electrical system specialist whom coordinates with APG team in assisting with difficulties such as, updating, maintaining, troubleshooting issues related to vehicle electrical systems.

  • Remains informed, educated and aware of new BEV/HV product platforms, safety requirements and latest system software and technology advancements prior to educating all EFK trained personnel.

  • Independently identifies, analyzes, and reports issues related to BEV/HV and electronic vehicle systems to various customers on an ongoing basis.

  • Informs leadership of required resources needed to conduct various types of BEV/HV and electronic systems testing.

  • Conducts general BEV/HV Sensitization Training on new Development Prototypes as required for APG Staff.

  • Maintains awareness of standard company testing tools used for Diagnosis, including but not limited to the following: ODIS Engineering; ODIS Service; iDEX; System42, DORIS, VDS; KPM; Canalyzer; Diagra; and CPTool.

Qualifications:

Years of Experience:

  • 5-7 years related experience in a corporate automotive engineering or vehicle testing environment

Education

  • Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in related engineering study

Education

  • Master's Degree in related engineering study

Work Flexibility:

  • Occasional domestic and international travel (average 2-3 times per year) required for business and training, including travel to remote sites and to Volkswagen Group international locations.

  • Travel to winter testing station in Fairbanks, Alaska for an extended stay of 3-4 weeks.

  • Work schedule based on business requirements (minimum 40 hours/week) including occasional weekends.

  • Participate in VW development/evaluation/ approval test drives to stay updated on latest technology.

  • Flexibility in schedule required due to unexpected changes and to meet deadlines.

  • Often driving a motor vehicle, including performance class and prototypes, and complete special training as required.
