Job Summary

As a payload engineer at NASA's Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility, you will work within a multidisciplinary team to ensure electrical subsystems are integrated and operational for successful sub-orbital long duration balloon flights. These activities will occur both at our facility in Palestine, Texas and at remote locations around the world. The position requires long term travel.

In this role you may:

  • Prepare balloon subsystems for flight and perform all pre-flight testing and calibration, including operation of an environmental test chamber and other metrology and calibration lab tools.

  • Monitor and control subsystems during flight to insure optimal performance.

  • Assist in the design/development and integration of satellite communication, telemetry, and data acquisition systems.

  • Work with science groups to ensure a successful integration of payload electrical and telemetry systems.

  • Perform related tasks that fall within the limits or required qualifications of the position

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Math, Physics with a minimum 2 years of related experience.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ability to travel to worldwide remote sites for extended time frames, up to 60% of the year

  • Ability to pass the physical (medical) requirements to work in Antarctica

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral, graphical, and written forms.

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex technical systems

  • Knowledge of electronic circuit design and troubleshooting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with satellite communications systems, DC power systems, or data acquisition systems

  • Familiarity with schematic capture software (ORCAD/ALTIUM)

  • Knowledge of serial communications protocols

  • Experience working with embedded microcontroller system design

  • Experience with LabView/LabWindows, C/C , Linux

VIEW JOBS 3/28/2020 12:00:00 AM 2020-06-26T00:00 PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under close supervision, performs routine technical functions related to the support of development engineering activities such as design, test, checkout, fabrication, modification, and assembly of electronics and Electro-mechanical systems, experimental design circuitry, prototype models or specialized test equipment. Applications may include analog, digital and/or video type circuits and logic systems. Guidance is readily available from superiors. Works from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, layouts or defined plans to perform routine testing, checkout, troubleshooting, prototype building, environmental testing, and simple developmental engineering tasks. Performs routine operational tests and fault isolation on development systems and equipment to ensure conformance with design specifications. Diagnoses and isolates malfunctions down to component level. Conducts defined engineering tests and collects data as assigned. Utilizes routine development or diagnostic equipment including oscilloscope, VOM, DVM, signal generators and similar test apparatus. EXPERIENCE and TRAINING: Electronics training equivalent to 2 years technical trade school or military technical school. Basic Qualifications: Must be able to travel up to 6 months a year. Antarctica Deployment is required with the ability to pass the Antarctica physical. Preferred Qualifications: Telemetry background is desirable.
