Sr. Clinical Systems Engineer

The Sr. Clinical Systems Engineer will support IOM's, and eventually clinical neurophysiology's, sub-specialized technology needs and ensure that IOM services, which rely heavily on specialized medical technology as well as some real-time remote review of neuromonitoring signaling data, are functional and safe across the division. This person will closely partner and have formal established indirect reporting relationships with MGB Digital, hospital-specific Biomedical Engineering departments, and relevant division directors.

The overarching goal of this position is to manage IOM's, and eventually clinical neurophysiology's, distinct, subspecialized technology needs in a consistent way across the MGB system, and in partnership with central MGB Digital and Biomedical Engineering. The Sr. Clinical Systems Engineer will also collaborate with existing technical experts in neurology departments, including clinical engineers, chief technologists and others.

The initial intent of this role is to focus 100% effort on the intraoperative neuromonitoring division at BWH & MGH, under the direction of the MGH & BWH IOM Division Director. This person will participate in longer term planning to align technology across both academic medical center IOM programs, and possibly community-based IOM programs in the MGB system.

The Sr. Clinical Systems Engineer will provide engineering services, including participating in the selection, acquisition, and service of medical devices, technical investigations of clinical incidents, and clinical/technical problem-solving. They may educate technologists about basic theories of system operation, lead quality improvement activities, or suggest innovative solutions to technical problems. They will develop strong working relationships with the technology vendors that supply the services.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Integration with MGB Biomedical and MGB Digital Leadership:

  • Develop relationships within central MGB Digital and MGB Biomedical Engineering divisions.

  • Understand central digital and biomed infrastructures and ensure the divisions are aware of major briefings and central planning efforts.

  • Focus on safe deployment of digital strategies in the healthcare system with expertise in clinical neurophysiology technologies.

Purchasing and contract negotiation:

  • Combine purchasing power across divisions/hospitals to negotiate best pricing for equipment and service contracts.

  • Assist in capital equipment purchases and preparation of budgets requests. Work with both divisions to coordinate the procurement of new devices including evaluation, selection, acquisition, user training, and installation.

  • Review service and equipment purchase quotes to assure best pricing.

Project management and program development leadership:

  • Serve as project lead on all installations and upgrades.

  • Work with appropriate internal MGB Digital teams and vendors to design and support interfaces between IOM systems and MGB enterprise applications such as Epic.

  • Interface with division leadership and MGB Digital leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate clinical applications providing updated analysis of systems and future needs.

  • Participate in design, implementation and analysis of studies for product evaluations and trials.

Development of system-wide clinical neurophysiology technology infrastructure:

  • Work toward ensuring IOM and eventually clinical neurophysiology divisions are on the same version of software and hardware where that infrastructure would support broader system collaboration goals.

  • Develop protocols and procedures for the use, maintenance, and testing of equipment.

  • Monitor software versions for inter-hospital compatibility.

  • Stay abreast of current technology and software for divisions/services.

Technical expert:

  • Ensure that clinical devices assigned to the team receive appropriate safety and functional testing, preventive maintenance, and service; assure the quality and timeliness of repair and testing of equipment; assure the thoroughness, accuracy and organization of service records.

  • Serve as the technical liaison between the healthcare system and technological vendors.

  • Offer high level overview of software and hardware needs.

Lead/manage embedded expert technical support of:

  • Performance of technical consultation in clinical areas.

  • Investigation of clinical incidents involving medical devices and file appropriate reports, disseminate information regarding possible hazards, and implement corrective action.

  • Communication to manufacturers about problems with medical devices; ensure appropriate response.

  • Evaluation of safety and efficacy of medical devices. Investigate cost-effectiveness of alternatives to current technologies.

  • Maintenance of knowledge of and advise hospital personnel of codes and regulations regarding clinical devices and support facilities.

  • Development of models for providing on-call response to administrative, management and/or technical problems.

  • Advisement of best practice for security and anti-virus.

  • Remote support as needed.

  • Provision of technical support and guidance for end-of-life server and storage upgrades.

  • Attend virtual meetings as needed for technical support.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Note: The term medical equipment may be either or all of electronic, mechanical and computer-based technologies for use in clinical or research applications. This is a leadership position with emphasis on embedding the IOM division into the digital services of the enterprise.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

1.Ability to carry out position with high degree of customer service, communication, teamwork, and timeliness.

2.Ability to work well under pressure and on concurrent, multidisciplinary projects.

3.Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems of moderate complexity.

4.Knowledge of electronic, mechanical and/or computer engineering design and applications' principles.

5.Computer literacy to the level of at least word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming.

6.Ability to interact with most hospital clinical personnel.

7.Skill in technical writing.

8.Skill in technical presentation and teaching.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Minimum Required: Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience)

Field of Study/Additional Specialized Training:

  • BS in Engineering or Clinical Engineering certification desirable

Equivalent Experience:

  • Five to seven years of experience in medical engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic setting preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Five to seven years of experience in medical engineering in a hospital, industry, or academic setting preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of healthcare IT workflows preferred.

  • Database report writing experience preferred.

  • Ensure accurate preparation and documentation of service and purchase requisitions within sphere of responsibility
