  • What You'll Do

DOTI's Project Delivery Administration- Environmental Implementation Division oversees an approximately $50 million annual capital improvement program for the city's storm, sanitary, and green infrastructure systems.  Our team's core mission is to BUILD PROJECTS that increases safety, sustainability, and health to the people of Denver and the environment. We accomplish this through the planning, design, and construction management of major capital improvements citywide. We work as a team, value trust, equity, innovation, and recognition.

The immediate Engineer opening requires at least 4 years of progressive engineering experience, with an emphasis on water resources/wastewater infrastructure planning and design. This position requires a PE License or the ability to obtain the license before the end of 1-year probation period. The successful candidate will report through the Planning Team which is responsible for long-range storm and sanitary master plans, project prioritization, six-year capital planning, grants, project budgeting, preliminary designs, agency coordination, and community education & outreach.

Planning studies may include storm and sanitary master planning, such as outfall systems plan (OSP), major drainageway plan (MDP), sanitary sewer master plan (SSMP), storm drainage master plan (SDMP), water-focused community outreach, grant identification, and program prioritization. Design projects may include large diameter storm systems, regional water quality facilities, gulch and stream reconstruction, sanitary/storm pipe lining projects, trenchless and open cut sanitary/storm design, lift stations, green infrastructure, bridges, multi-modal transportation elements, and park improvements. Primary roles and responsibilities may include the following:

  • Manage and coordinate the technical execution of wastewater-related planning studies.

  • Assist in the build out of the City's urban flood risk model by managing task orders fulfilled by our on-call consultants, as well as conducting self-performed analysis to compliment the effort.

  • Provide technical input and guidance to support ongoing and future planning studies. Leverage and advocate best modeling practices to further enhance Denver's sanitary sewer and storm drainage planning efforts.

  • Manage flow monitoring program to support sanitary and storm drainage master planning.

  • Prepare documentation, reports, and presentations.

  • Support grant applications for external funding on capital projects.

  • Conduct QA/QC on deliverables, as well as perform reviews of work performed by others to ensure accuracy and completeness, standard of care, and compliance with design criteria and standard practices.

  • Foster relationships and collaborate with other city agencies, regional partners, business and/or community groups, City Council, and the public.

  • Support major design efforts in a planning capacity that may include storm, sanitary, and green infrastructure projects.

  • Serve as a technical and/or subject matter expert and provide training and mentoring to other staff members in the areas of project development, project design, project specification preparation, project management, contract management, quality control, and/or work program implementation.

  • Work with the Real Estate group to develop and manage a program to obtain properties to minimize the impact of flooding.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

  • The ideal candidate has 4 to 8 years of progressive experience in civil engineering with specific experience in wastewater/water resources master planning a plus.

  • Background and experience in the planning and design of storm and sanitary conveyance projects.

  • Strong communication, collaboration skills and experience working with diverse groups of stakeholders and the public through community engagement.

  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation

  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Skilled in ArcGIS Pro/ArcMap desktop and online products.

  • Understanding of H&H modeling principals, hands-on experience in EPA SWMM modeling, with experience in 1D-2D integrated modeling such as InfoWorks ICM a plus.

  • Passion for water resources and the environment

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Requirement:bachelor's degree in engineering.

  • Experience Requirement: 4 years' experience as an entry level Engineer.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for experience requirements.

  • Requires registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Colorado State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers or the ability to obtain the license at completion of 1-year probation.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Location Flexibility

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.
